Just as it seemed the pandemic newbuilding wave had come to an end, stronger markets, Red Sea turmoil and fears over shipyard capacity have seen an explosion of new containership orders. Two of the most striking characteristics of the fresh newbuilding push are that the orders are mainly LNG-dual fuel and have predominantly been placed at shipyards in China. In contrast to 2023, when a little more than half of the total new orders were methanol dual-fuel and only 28% were LNG dual-fuel, 2024 has seen two-thirds of the total new orders being LNG dual-fuel and only 16% being methanol dual-fuel. That 85% of the new orders have been contracted at shipyards in China points to the country’s expanding dominance in newbuild markets. A third striking feature is that only 3% of the total 3.1m TEU contracted in 2024 is 100-3,900 TEU feeders and 3.1% 3,900-7.600 TEU midsize vessels. This will help prolong a coming period of low – if not negative – fleet growth in smaller fleet segments. MSI publishes monthly reports across all major and specialist shipping segments. MOL inks long-term time charter contract of six LNG carriers with QatarEnergy Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that it entered into a long-term time charter contract of six QC-MAX, 271,000m3 LNG carriers with QatarEnergy last week. The vessels will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. in China, for delivery between 2028 and 2031, and be jointly owned with COSCO SHIPPING LNG Investment (Shanghai) Co. MOL, as one of the world’s largest owners of LNG carriers, since the mid-1990s, has expanded and strengthened the relationship with QatarEnergy through its global LNG transportation. MOL’s track record in LNG transportation and commitment in safe navigation have led to the successful conclusion of this contract. This contract will further increase the awarded vessels to MOL under the historic shipping expansion program for the North Field Expansion Project to 13 vessels, said a release.
