What goes on at a COP meeting? In this video, we offer a glimpse of the energy (and sheer chaos) of a COP. Despite naysayers, this is still the place to listen, learn, and be heard on climate change. COP29 just wrapped up in Baku, Azerbaijan, where our Editor-in-Chief Nirmal Kishnani was a panellist at a session hosted by the Centre for Liveable Cities, as part of the COP29 Singapore Pavilion offerings. These pavilion sessions, offered by governments, companies, and NGOs, take place in parallel with closed-door negotiations on the COP items of agreement. Dr Kishnani — highlighting his research at the National University of Singapore — spoke alongside four experts in a session on 21 November titled 'Towards a city in nature'. It focused on the adoption of nature-based solutions in cities. Hopes are high for significant outcomes at COP29 for Global Climate Action, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The 29th Conference of Parties centered on key themes such as finance, energy, technology, and biodiversity. This year's commitments from global leaders are anticipated to play a monumental role in driving impactful actions towards addressing climate change. The primary focus areas include investment and finance to establish frameworks that mobilize capital for tackling climate and social challenges, energy and technology to promote digital innovation and build a resilient energy future, human capital & social development, food and agriculture, urbanization and transport with an emphasis on creating inclusive cities and promoting clean mobility solutions, and nature and biodiversity to safeguard flora and fauna, support indigenous communities, and ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion. COP29 is expected to witness commitments towards financing mechanisms for climate mitigation and adaptation. 🌍 COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan: Innovation Zone Highlights 🌍 My impressions from the Climate Action Innovation Zone on Day 1 were very positive! 1. Proud Moment for Azerbaijan : Hosting COP29 is a significant achievement and milestone. Hats off to everyone who contributed to this. 👏 2. Sustainability in the Spotlight: It’s inspiring to see sustainability taking centre stage, with diverse actors like politicians, NGOs, corporate leaders, financial institutions, and global citizens. 🌱 3. Defining Sustainable Development: With so many actors with varying interests, defining sustainable development isn’t easy. The most cited definition I’ve come across is “development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” I like this definition 👍. As a parent, I want to know the next generation has a sustainable future without sacrificing economic prosperity. The next couple of days promise to be interesting.
