COP29 - the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will take place from November 11 to 22 in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. I am delighted to be part of the Norwegian Business delegation at COP29 together with Head of Sustainability, Hanne Rolén. At SLB Capturi, the carbon capture joint venture between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture, we are in a first row seat to the challenges that finance poses when trillions of dollars are required for countries to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect lives and livelihoods from the worsening impacts of climate change. By contributing to the COP29, we will highlight the learnings from our own projects to enable more and faster implementation of green technology at scale. SLB Capturi is the only company in Europe building more than 1 million tonnes of carbon capture projects today and where nearly half of the projects were financed from CDR credits - carbon dioxide removal credits. Led by Jeyhun Atayev, Head of COP29 Legacy Initiatives, the panel explored how Azerbaijan is shaping a sustainable future post-COP29. Counting down to COP29: 11-22 November! In just two weeks, the annual climate conference COP29 will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan. Net Zero Delivery Summit 2024 - held at Mansion House London today. The Net Zero Delivery Summit (NZDS) 2024 is hosted by the City of London Corporation in partnership with the Sustainable Markets Initiative and sponsored by EY and LIIBA. The summit marked the halfway point between COP28 in the United Arab Emirates and COP29 in Azerbaijan. Michael Mainelli reminded the room and those on line in his opening speech today of the existential threat posed by climate change - one that, left unaddressed, will not only impact everyday life for each and every one of us, but how we do business too. “It is estimated that $6tn will be required globally each year to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Private finance has the critical role to play, over 85%, in financing green innovation, green infrastructure, and green growth." 139 UK investors, £89 Billion responsible business funds, £11.6 Billion climate finance committed by the UK. 🌍Simplifying sustainability: From the ground of COP29 in Baku🌍 Today I joined a panel in the Climate Innovation Zone to discuss sustainable infrastructure in cities. Bringing the right people together in a room can immediately turn ideas into action. Despite lacking the clarity and the certainty of supporting policy, and some frustration around pace, it’s clear that organisations aren’t slowing down. There are some powerful examples of organisations executing whole-of-business model changes and reexamining the way things have been done before to embed resilience into our places and spaces. How are they doing this? By simplifying the task at hand. While the challenges are complex, the way forward does not have to be.
