G-Star has partnered with Spinning Jenny, Liberty Threads, and Blueprint Amsterdam to produce the first 100% locally sourced and manufactured jeans.  "Cotton cultivation in greenhouses results in a production increase of five to 23 times and significantly less water usage (95%) thanks to the reuse of (rain)water." I love seeing companies adapting to climate change & finding solutions to a circular economy, where work with nature to mitigate environmental risks and agricultural losses. R&D suggests profitability in scale, however, initial production costs are too high, making greenhouse-grown cotton not economically viable. Between 80 and 100 billion new clothing garments are produced globally every year. 87% of the materials and fibers used to make clothing will end up in either incinerators or landfills. This Dutch company is recycling 2400 shoes per hour and is preventing millions of them from ending up in landfills 👟 Every year, we produce around 24 billion shoes. That’s 3 pairs per person on the planet. Shoes are made of plastics, rubbers & other materials. That makes it hard to recycle them. So 95% of them end up in landfills and incinerators. Staying there for decades and even centuries. FastFeetGrinded is tackling this problem. It has developed a recycling process. That can recycle 100% of the footwear. 👟 The process starts with conveyor belts that feed large grinders with shoes. 👟 They are then broken down with heat and friction. 👟 The recycled components are then used to construct other products and shoes. Founded in 2015, California-based unspun™, provides 3D weaving technology eliminating waste and emissions and enabling circular production for the fashion sector, while lowering production costs. The company’s technology, Vega, weaves thousands of yarns into garments in minutes, which unspun said allows for almost zero-waste, on-demand, local manufacturing. According to unspun, the technology allows traditional cut-make-trim facilities to make clothing four times faster, with 53% emissions reduction, 49% reduced energy demand and a 39% reduction in blue water consumption. It also said its process is more efficient, with less than 3% waste of cut fabric compared to the industry average of 15%. https://lnkd.in/ezB3EsCz

OutDoor by ISPO 2024 - European textile consumption ranks fourth in environmental impact, trailing food, housing, and mobility. Clothing brands are embracing responsibility for circularity, promoting recycling and minimizing waste. (1) The EU generates 12.6 million tonnes of textile waste per year. Clothing and footwear alone accounts for 5.2 million tonnes of waste, equivalent to 12 kg of waste per person every year. Currently, only 22 % of post-consumer textile waste is collected separately for re-use or recycling, while the remainder is often incinerated or landfilled. (2) However, there’s hope on the horizon. Heartbreaking news for the textile industry, when innovation hits but the gap between current systems and the new technologies is misunderstood or not represented great things burn bright but only for a moment. Hope is not lost however, today there is significantly greater awareness of this problem and people seeking better solutions than there were a few years ago. We must remember not every company makes it even if the have a great idea or product. I believe we will succeed in creating a closed loop circular supply chain for textiles.

The textile industry is at a crossroads. While it plays a vital role in our lives, its CO2 footprint is undeniable. But instead of lamenting the problem, let's focus on solutions! Here's how innovation can revolutionize textiles and save our planet: 🌍 Second-Hand Revolution: 1.Embracing pre-owned clothing extends garment lifespans and reduces the need for virgin materials and production emissions. 2.Supporting online marketplaces and physical stores dedicated to second-hand fashion makes sustainable choices accessible to all. Rental Revolution: 1. Renting clothes for special occasions or trendy pieces reduces overall consumption and promotes a "wear, not own" mentality. 2.Rental models encourage responsible production practices and garment care, fostering a more circular textile economy. Recycling : 1. Advanced recycling technologies are transforming textile waste into valuable new materials, minimizing environmental impact. 2.Developing closed-loop recycling systems ensures textiles stay in use, reducing reliance on virgin resources and lowering CO2 emissions.

This right here. That's the issue. It's a low-price buying culture that we are fighting. 10 to 100 times higher costs translate into items, such as Evrnu's $600 hoodie. But that's what it costs to be green. "Even if innovators produce novel inputs that are far less environmentally damaging as compared to incumbents (for example a bio based, biodegradable fiber as compared to an oil based non biodegradable synthetic) their costs will likely be 10X to 100X that of the incumbent (see the reasons enumerated above). That is why, at present, innovators get articles in Fast Company and pilots from “progressive” brands, but, do not get scale orders to compress their price gap vs incumbents….often resulting in a financing crisis."
