Dr. Seksom Attamangkul, a leading expert in the nutrition and management of pigs in tropical conditions, presented "Rearing without antibiotics in swine production to optimize profitability of operations," during the EW Nutrition Swine Academy in Ho Chi Minh City, 14 October 2024. Being a process just makes sense – we are trying to some extent to mimic nature where weaning is a gradual process taking place 8-12+ weeks of age, then the pig is consuming some solid feed, and is more physiologically mature.  As part of the weaning process we need to consider how to ensure good digestive development pre-weaning to prevent post-weaning setbacks. He also stressed that nutrition is not just feed, it’s about feeding as well. He emphasised that most foetal growth and mammary gland development occurred in the last month of gestation. This means we need to feed to body condition score (BCS), not a set amount of feed. The ideal is to have sows in BCS3, or ideally 2.75 at the end of 3 months of gestation, so we can feed more in the last month to achieve BCS3-3.25 at farrowing. He highlighted that we need to work with farm staff to achieve this. EW Nutrition

Leveraging enzymatic strategies for NSP management in swine feeds leads to significant improvements in nutrient bioavailability, optimizes gastrointestinal functionality, and streamlines feed resource utilization, supporting a more efficient and sustainable approach to swine nutrition. The study explored the utilization of distillers grains as a feed ingredient through the innovative combination of probiotics and enzymes, resulting in enhanced fermentation and nutrient profiles. The synergistic action of multi-probiotic strains and complex enzymes significantly improved protein and fat content while decreasing fiber levels and anti-nutritional factors in the fermented feed.
