Last month, we conducted 8 cleanups in vulnerable natural ecosystems in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains, in India. The region, while beautiful, struggles with waste management. Rugged terrain, rapidly evolving climate trends, and remote settlements all contribute to the challenges here. The local community came together to volunteer for the initiative, supported by our brand partners and local impact partner Waste Warriors Society Clean ups are a great tool in the solutions for the global plastic waste crisis. But there's no silver bullet solution. There are several levers to pull and multiple tools needed to change the status quo of plastic pollution - reduction, reuse, recovery, recycling, infrastructure development, skill building, awareness building, and more - all have a role to play. The marine litter crisis is escalating, and is expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2040, adding 23 to 37 million metric tonnes annually. Our ecosystem solution reducing #marineplastic pollution across the coastline of India will create a #circulareconomy when the waste sector workforce is socio-economically benefited. While we have worked with formal and informal waste professionals across geographies, we will now also be working with over 1 Lac fisherfolk, 80% of which are women-led SHGs, by offering them fair incentives and alternative livelihoods to recover marine plastics. 🌊 A healthy ocean is critical for climate and biodiversity. Plastic pollution disrupts the ocean's ability to absorb carbon dioxide, further accelerating climate change. Plastic waste not only impacts marine ecosystems but also permeates through the food chain, affecting biodiversity and human health. Addressing this requires a multifaceted approach that includes enhancing waste management practices, promoting plastic alternatives, enabling circularity, integrating the informal workforce, and fostering #GlobalCooperation in line with the theme of #WorldOceanDay 2024, #CatalyzingActionForOurOceanAndClimate. 🌐 USAID, through the #SaveOurSeas Initiative, is implementing programs to reduce the flow of ocean plastic pollution in over 25 cities across more than 10 countries. The inREPLACE Program is actively contributing to this mission.
