The National Semiconductor Strategy 2029, adopted by the Czech government on 10 October 2024, is a pivotal move to establish the Czech Republic as a semiconductor powerhouse by 2029. This strategy builds on Czechoslovakia’s historical leadership in semiconductor manufacturing during the Soviet Bloc era and aligns with the European Chips Act, aiming to strengthen the EU’s strategic autonomy. By tripling sector size, establishing a competence centre, and driving innovation, the Czech Republic is set to play a crucial role in Europe’s quest for technological sovereignty.
The geopolitical landscape adds urgency to this endeavour. Our economic adversaries, with centrally controlled economies and leadership that remains in power for extended periods, have a clear advantage—they can execute long-term plans with consistent support, enabling them to become self-sufficient and challenge global tech leadership. To compete, the US, EU, and their allies must adopt similar strategic approaches, with government-driven support and guidance for the tech industry. Without this, Western democracies risk falling behind.
Czechoslovakia’s rich legacy as a technological innovator—home to inventions like soft contact lenses and Semtex explosives—provides a strong foundation for this future. By 2040, the country targets inclusion in the top 10 EU nations by GDP per capita, highlighting the broader economic ambitions tied to this strategy. With strong educational institutions, an advanced R&D sector, and a focused government strategy, the Czech Republic is leveraging its historical strengths to drive semiconductor innovation and supply chain resilience.

🚀 Exciting News for the Czech Semiconductor Sector! 🇨🇿✨
Yesterday saw the official approval and launch of the Czech National #Semiconductor Strategy (Národní polovodičová strategie) by Ministerstvo průmyslu a obchodu České republiky!
This ambitious initiative aims to position the Czech Republic as a key player in the global semiconductor landscape, with a goal to TRIPLE the size of the semiconductor sector in the country by 2029. For that, the strategy has allocated roughly 1 bn EUR (24.166 mil Kč , 967 Mio EUR) to several key measures and also contains clear KPIs.
Key objectives of the strategy (translated from the document):
🔹 Implementation of the European Chips Act: We are committed to aligning our efforts with the European Chips Act, establishing a national competence center to enhance our research, development, and innovation capabilities.
🔹 Boosting Exports: Aiming for a 200% increase in advanced technology exports by 2029, we will actively seek new markets and promote our homegrown semiconductor companies on the international stage.
🔹 Enhancing R&D: We will invest in excellent research teams and increase funding for applied research, ensuring that innovation remains at the forefront of our semiconductor industry.
🔹 Talent Development: With a vision to triple the number of skilled experts in our sector, we will focus on education, training, and attracting international talent to meet the demands of this rapidly evolving industry.
🔹 Supporting Business Growth: By fostering startups, aiding the internationalization of SMEs, and improving conditions for foreign investment, we will create a thriving ecosystem for innovative semiconductor products.
This strategy not only strengthens the national capabilities but also contributes to the strategic autonomy of the European Union. 💡🌍
