Looking forward to participating this week in the 15th Biennial International Transformative Learning Conference (ITLC) https://lnkd.in/ewuDrFak. I will present with my colleagues Dr. Lawrence and Dr. Spain on  Creative Discomfort: Brave Spaces for Transformative Learning. Our presentation will center on how Creative Discomfort can use arts-based learning and creative community engagement to introduce intentional disruptions or navigate disorienting dilemmas in adult learning spaces. These disruptions, such as embodied artistic activities or discussions of positionality, often provoke discomfort, challenging participants to confront privilege, oppression, or power dynamics. While discomfort can feel overwhelming, it can also serve as a catalyst for transformative learning. We echo the reframing of discomfort as "good trouble," using it as a constructive force for growth and deeper engagement in both personal and collective learning experiences.

🌍 Global Cities Brings Together Educators to Celebrate a Decade of Impact, Look Ahead 🌎 136 educators. 42 cities. 18 countries. One shared goal. For three days, teachers and education leaders from around the world came together in Washington, DC to celebrate the Global Cities Decade of Impact and their shared work to help young people engage in global learning and prepare them to solve our world’s biggest problems. The participating educators represented a total of 528 teachers worldwide who lead Global Cities’ signature virtual exchange program, Global Scholars. Through the Global Scholars Program, more than 116,000 students from 117 cities in 39 countries have engaged with their peers around the world in e-classroom discussion boards. That’s more than 116,000 students who are solving global problems together while acquiring cultural understanding and an appreciation of different perspectives. Global Cities, Inc., a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies, hosted the convening, and OECD Education and Skills and AFS Intercultural Programs served as co-sponsors. In addition to being a celebration, the convening was an interactive forum for participants to learn and reflect. Educators emerged from three action-packed days of panels, workshops, speakers, and socializing, having forged strong connections and feeling energized to bring global competency to more classrooms. “It's very important to have global competency education in my country,” said Isabel Cristina Mora Salazar from Medellín, Colombia. “Right now, I'm the only one teaching [Global Scholars] in Colombia. I'm excited to go home, take what I’ve learned, and invite more teachers to participate." As Global Scholars begins its second decade, attendees learned about fresh insights, research, and innovation related to the program and global competency education. The power of experiential learning lies not just in its application but in its accessibility. How do we ensure that every student, regardless of background or ability, benefits from these invaluable learning opportunities? My article “The Power of Experiential Learning and Strategies for Inclusivity", now published on Medium, discusses the transformative potential of experiential learning and explores actionable strategies to make it accessible for every student. It focuses on: - The essence of experiential learning and its profound impact on education. - The indispensable principles of inclusive education and how they align with Universal Design for Learning (UDL). - Practical strategies for educators and institutions to foster an inclusive experiential learning environment. “When I conduct research and consult with hundreds and hundreds of schools all around the world, there’s one thing that really characterises successful teaching in today’s learning for tomorrow’s world: great teachers deliberately confront the complexity of our world by designing intentional learning relationships and personalising (both individually and collectively) how they are teaching our students the character, competency and wellness to thrive in it. This is happening despite the increasing imposition of seductively reductive and patently impersonal one-size-fits-all approaches, especially those which emphasise pedagogies of coercion and control which are masked as evidence-based scientific approaches to learning when, in fact, they’re anything but that. A playbook to scaffold science-informed and evidence-based approaches that support teacher professional judgment and the growth of adaptive expertise and self-efficacy? Yes! A scripted list of mandated rules based on “The Science of Whatever” that is imposed inflexibly with a combination of evangelical zeal and narrow-minded judgmentalism which produces, at best, knowledge-rich but submissive compliance? No. This is not today’s learning for tomorrow’s world. Instead, great teachers around the world are using evidence and emerging understandings about a wide range of sciences judiciously and in context. They’re co-creating learning processes that help students to develop the character, competency and wellness they will need to thrive in today’s and tomorrow’s world. This is exemplified in teaching and learning that amplifies the voice, agency and advocacy of every student. "We don’t know if what we do will last a hundreds years later, but we can imagine and make it." It’s been 3 months since I came back to Vietnam, and it’s been a journey rediscovering myself and the land. Sam Lien Nguyen once shared that if one chooses to return to Vietnam, it is not because that choice is easier, but because that person is truly seriously committed to the decision. This idea has been stuck in my mind since the day I read it in 2022 until now. Fast forward to this year 2024, I find myself committed to the inaugural UWC Short Course: Doing Good in Vietnam. The camp aims to bring together eager high school students from across the world to Binh Dinh, Vietnam to answer the question: “What is good work and how do we do it?” 💡UWC Short Course: Doing Good aims to be a touchpoint where students can reflect, express, and learn in a safe environment alongside their peers from different parts of the globe and Vietnam while having fun and making meaningful memories. 🌱 We aim to inspire and equip high school students with the tools to "do good" in the real world. Students will engage and learn from a team of highly dedicated Facilitators, local organizations and social enterprises to help apply their learnings into a specific context. By the end of the course, students will walk away developing their agency in implementing Good Work in their daily lives and will acquire the tools for Doing Good in their own communities. We hope to continue our impact beyond this year. These are our first steps, and we need your help.
