This WhiskEye Robot is a fascinating example of bio-inspired robotics! 🐀 By mimicking the way rodents use their whiskers to sense their surroundings, this robot offers a unique approach to navigation and perception. Here's why I find this so intriguing: Novel Sensing Modality: The use of artificial whiskers provides a different way for robots to perceive their environment, complementing traditional sensors like cameras and lidar. This could be particularly useful in situations where vision is limited, such as in dark or cluttered spaces. Biomimicry: Drawing inspiration from the natural world often leads to innovative solutions in robotics. The WhiskEye Robot demonstrates how studying animal behavior can lead to new approaches in robot design and perception. Potential Applications: This technology could have various applications, including: Search and Rescue: Navigating through rubble and debris in disaster scenarios. Environmental Monitoring: Exploring confined spaces or underground environments. Inspection and Maintenance: Inspecting pipes and other infrastructure with limited access. It's exciting to see how researchers are exploring unconventional sensing modalities to enhance robot perception and create more adaptable and versatile robots. #robotics #biomimicry #bioinspired #whiskers #sensors #perception #innovation #technology #bristolroboticslaboratory #sheffieldrobotics

Flying... The dream of human beings and sick birds. Some time ago I finished the course at the University of Pennsylvania through Coursera on Aerial Robotics. It focuses on mechanical modeling, simulation and control of quadcopters, but covers several general robotics concepts such as motion planning, collision avoidance and group decision making (herd robots). 100% recommended both as an introductory course to robotics and aerial systems. #upenn #coursera #robotics #quadcopters
