International partnership in favor of biodiversity! Suzano and IFC - International Finance Corporation, a member of The World Bank Group, have established a partnership with the initial goal of reconnecting 35,000 hectares of native vegetation in the Cerrado biome, near our Cerrado Project, in the Mato Grosso do Sul state. This initiative is part of our commitment to connect 500,000 hectares of fragmented native areas across three different biomes, Cerrado, Amazon, and Atlantic Forest by 2030. In 2023 alone, Suzano connected 55,654 hectares of fragments, thus combating a major global threat to biodiversity driven by human activity, habitat fragmentation. (Learn more about our biodiversity long-term goal: https://lnkd.in/eAsmDRNc) An ambitious and complex goal like our biodiversity commitment, which involves the engagement of third parties and their areas, is only possible through strategic partnerships. The sustainable future is collaborative! #WePlantTheFuture #biodiversity #ESG

As someone who’s worked on biodiversity monitoring projects and documented ecosystems in data-scarce regions, I find myself with mixed feelings about the upcoming launch of Ramboll’s Global Biodiversity Metric (#GBM). The ambition to create a global standard for measuring biodiversity impact is admirable, but can we truly capture the complexity of ecosystems across the world with one tool? During my recent MSc project, I had the privilege of using the Singapore Biodiversity Accounting Metric Version 1.1, designed specifically for Singapore—a small, highly urbanized country with relatively well-documented biodiversity. Even in this context, challenges arose in translating ecological complexity into quantifiable metrics. So when I think about applying a global metric like GBM to regions where biodiversity data is often incomplete or outdated, I have to wonder: can it really address the inequities in our understanding of ecosystems globally? While common standards are necessary to drive meaningful action, the realities on the ground often tell a different story. How do we ensure that local, often overlooked ecosystems aren’t left behind in the global push for biodiversity metrics? I’m curious to see how the #GBM will evolve, but it’s clear that bridging the gap between global metrics and local realities will be one of the most important challenges as we move forward. I look forward to its launch at #COP16 in Cali this October. #Biodiversity #ConservationChallenges #COP16 #GlobalBiodiversityMetric
📌 Coming soon: Ramboll’s Global Biodiversity Metric 🌎 🌵 Ramboll is developing a global biodiversity metric #GBM to quantify and measure potential impacts to global habitats. The free and open-source metric is a major step toward a common standard for biodiversity assessment around the world. 🎯 The GBM is intended for organisations, businesses, governments, and other land-managing entities with interests that extend into countries that don’t currently have a national metric, as well as those looking to assign biodiversity values across assets globally. 🌳 But perhaps more importantly, the GBM will provide the ability for any organisation to assess biodiversity value for defining action plans, setting and monitoring science-based targets #SBTN, evidencing green claims, disclosures and reporting, such as #CSRD and #TNFD. ❣️ The GBM is based on the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology, and adapted from the Natural England Biodiversity Metric, providing a common basis for dialogue with stakeholders on the complexity of ecosystems and addressing biodiversity loss. ☝️ The GBM will be launched at the UN Biodiversity Conference, #COP16, in Cali, Colombia, in October 2024. This tool (not yet launched, so no one can actually review it yet and say with any certainty whether it does what it says) has certainly generated some comment and debate. I'll reserve judgement until I see it, but will make an observation from a purely UK perspective. The tool states it uses the IUCN Ecosystem Typology as a starting point for its metric. The IUCN typology takes a very different approach to classifying ecosystems compared to UKHab and the classifications upon which UKHab is derived (e.g. UKBAP and Annex 1). There is a substantial divergence of approach to classification even at the broadest scale. That doesn't make one approach better than the other, only to say that I would caution anyone converting habitat data using UK habitat classifications into the IUCN typology without due consideration to the differences. If anyone is brave enough to think about a correspondence between #UKHab and the IUCN Typology, please do talk to ukhab.org before you start.

A programme that aims to halt the net loss of biodiversity by 2030 in Mexico, while developing nature markets including biodiversity credits with regional governments, has been announced in an alliance between French and Mexican companies. The NetPositive 2030 programme, focused on biodiversity, carbon, and water, will be supported by a partnership between France-based biodiversity credits company Nat5 and Mexico-headquartered consultancy MEXHUB de Economía Circular. Two Mexican states are involved so far, with MexHub tasked with incentivising others to join, in an initiative that aims to build momentum over time, said🌱 Guillermo H., CEO of Nat5. The programme will focus on generating nature credits across biodiversity, soil, water, and carbon from regeneration projects financed by corporations. “While the programme is designed to make significant contributions toward halting biodiversity loss, it is important to clarify that we are not claiming to achieve this alone,” Hinojos told Thomas Cox. “Instead, the initiative aims to play a crucial role in fostering collaboration among various stakeholders – including governments, private sector companies, and local communities – to collectively work toward this important goal.” Read and subscribe: https://lnkd.in/eSDfrDcw

As we mark the International Day of Biological Diversity on May 22nd, it's a poignant reminder of the critical role biodiversity plays in preserving our planet's delicate balance. This year's theme, 'Be Part of the Plan,' underscores the urgency for all stakeholders to unite in safeguarding biodiversity by championing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, commonly known as the Biodiversity Plan. Understanding the profound risks posed by biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, C.P. Group is resolutely committed to achieving a Net Positive Impact by 2030. Our commitment aligns seamlessly with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and UN Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 15. We have established ambitious targets aimed at conserving, restoring, and sustainably managing forest ecosystems across our operations and supply chain. Embracing the principles outlined in the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) framework, we publish a comprehensive biodiversity report. This report not only deepens our understanding of our interconnectedness with nature but also informs our strategic decision-making, planning processes, and enterprise risk management. Recognizing that collaboration is paramount, C.P. Group actively seeks partnerships with stakeholders at both the national and international levels to expedite biodiversity conservation and restoration efforts. We firmly believe that everyone has a vital role to play in safeguarding and revitalizing biodiversity. Therefore, we stand prepared to champion a whole – of – society approach towards realizing the objectives outlined in the Biodiversity Plan, with the ultimate goal of positioning Thailand as a nature positive by 2030. #cpgroup

International Day for Biodiversity: The Quest for Permanence. Biodiversity is central to TBN’s carbon projects. Our scientists develop as close to 100% ‘re-creations’ of the original Mata Atlantica Rainforests as is possible. This means planting a MINIMUM diversity of 80 indigenous species of tree per hectare. We create the optimal conditions for these new rainforests to thrive, and to regenerate the degraded soil and water quality within these areas, which, in turn, leads to the natural return of native insects, birds and other wild fauna. However, the hard fact is that biodiversity requires a level of permanence that most developers of Nature Based Solution developers don’t incorporate within their operational strategy. Most reforestation projects that are financed by carbon sequestration use leased land - guaranteeing that the carbon is sequestered for the tenor of the lease, and no more. The same applies to the biodiversity within these new ecosystems. Leased land is vulnerable to reversal and - TBN believes - not a sufficiently stable foundation for reforestation and the carbon credits that finance these projects. No wonder such projects have been attracting negative media attention and drawing accusations of greenwashing. That’s why TBN buys the land upon which our rainforests are regrown. That's why TBN maintains ownership of that land - and it provides these forests with legal protection by granting it legal private parkland status - in perpetuity. Our business model ensures real permanence. Real additionality. And, by deploying our financial resources to the local communities around our projects, we also deliver real positive impact for jobs and the local communities. TBN knows that biodiversity is crucial to optimising carbon projects. But to be truly valuable and credible, biodiversity has to be durable, permanent and protected. #Biodiversity #NatureBasedSolutions #CarbonCredits #MataAtlantica #Reforestation #IDB

Suzano International has been in Cali, Colombia, since last week, actively engaging in various discussions taking place as part of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, COP16, and showcasing our efforts to restore and preserve biodiversity. Suzano’s commitment to biodiversity is not recent. We have over 1.1 million hectares dedicated to conservation, and since 2010, we have developed an Ecological Restoration Program that, in the last four years, has restored over 145,000 hectares of native areas. Additionally, recognizing that the fragmentation of natural and forest areas is one of the main threats to biodiversity, by 2030, we plan to connect, through ecological corridors, 500,000 hectares of Amazon, Atlantic Forest, and Cerrado fragments, an area four times the size of the city of Rio de Janeiro. These are just a few examples. Altogether, Suzano directly supports 16 of the 23 targets of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (also known as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework). A good example of how biodiversity thrives in our areas can be seen in the images captured by camera traps within our production and conservation areas, notably Neblinas Park, a 7,000-hectare Atlantic Forest environmental reserve maintained by Suzano. See the video below for more. #WePlantTheFuture #COP16 #Biodiversity
