Please join us at the College of Engineering – Oregon State University for our 1st Geo-Institute GSO Lecture of the new term, "Geology Runs Through It: On the Role of Depositional Environment and Fabric in the Mechanical Behavior of Granular Sediments," by Edward G. Cahill and John R. Cahill Distinguished Professor Nicholas Sitar of UC Berkeley, at 1pm on October 7th in 311 Kearney Hall. This presentation will focus on the challenges in characterizing and modeling the behavior of lightly consolidated and/or weakly cemented coarse sediments: silts, sands, and gravels of various origins, ranging from volcanic tephras, to glacial gravels, marine terrace sands, and shallow estuarine sand bars. Although formed in different environments, their behavior exhibits many similarities and, in all cases, the evaluation of their undisturbed/in-situ strength characteristics poses a particular challenge. Come join us as we learn about Professor Sitar's efforts to characterize depositional soil fabric and its impact on shear strength, dilatancy, crushability, and liquefaction susceptibility, among other factors.

Another world-class outcrop explored by our bachelor students Department of Earth Sciences - UNIGE with Sébastien Castelltort, Lucas Vimpere and Marine Prieur. At the top of the Esclangon panorama near Digne-les-Bains, facing the scenic "Velodrome", we discussed the complex interplay of tectonic and sedimentological processes involved in the growth of the Alps, including perspectives from applied geology with Arnaud Le Bec.

With Discovery Day fast approaching, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on our keynote speaker. Dr. Lee Harrop is an innovative ecologically-oriented artist and researcher known for her collaborative interdisciplinary projects. For over a decade, Dr. Harrop has collaborated with geologists and core libraries across Australia, incorporating geological core samples into her art. With a diverse publication record in both traditional and non-traditional formats, she has received several prestigious awards and grants, including recent funding for a public art project in Darwin. Recently, our South Australia Drill Core Library hosted Dr. Harrop for a three-week residency, which culminated in the inaugural viewing of her research for the Mapping Shadows of the Bight (MSB) project. One of her research outputs is an engraved core sample featuring a line from T.S. Eliot’s poem "Little Gidding," the final poem in Four Quartets. This engraved core will remain in its original library core tray (hidden in the shadows) and can be viewed at the drill core library upon request. Presentation Title: "Removal of iron and manganese from groundwater resources - Including for drinking water" Please see the short Bio written by long term colleague, friend IAH VIC committee member Alan Wade: "I've known Geoff for about 36 years! Geoff has over 25 years of experience in the field of hydrogeology, he is passionate about providing expert advice and solutions to clients in the private, public, and environmental sectors. As the founder and chief scientist of Coble Geophysical Services, he has successfully modelled and evaluated shallow and deep aquifers, advised enhanced remediation techniques, and solved complex design problems. In Geoff’s current role, he uses his background in hydrogeology, geophysics and environmental geology to provide hydrogeologic advice to utility providers, environmental clients, and government agencies. He also conducts research and development on new and improved methods and tools for hydrogeologic approaches to Alaskan problems. Some of his recent projects include establishing a well field in a seasonally confined aquifer, designing and implementing a stormwater management and treatment plan for a major industrial site, and assessing the responsible party for a landslide."
