Join SITA's head of Borders, Jeremy Springall, at ID4AFRICA on May 23rd, from 11:00am – 1pm to explore how digital identities are transforming travel as we know it. Why? IATA projects we’ll have 8 billion air travelers annually by 2024. That’s double the amount we’ve seen in 2019! But how will airports handle this air travel boom? The answer is tech! Digital solutions will keep everything running smoothly, replacing tickets and IDs with facial recognition and fingerprint scans. No more digging through your bag for documents - just a seamless border crossing with SITA's digital credentials. How cool is that? Can’t be there? SITA's white paper dives deep into the challenges of managing all these extra travelers. We observed personally - it has become so smart & efficient....
In 2023, more than 21 million travelers passed through passport control at Dubai airports in just minutes, which is a 55% increase from the previous year. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai revealed that these passengers used 127 smart gates at Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum International (DWC) without needing help from immigration officials. Some of the smart gates, especially at DXB Terminal 3, were upgraded in October with facial recognition features. This means travelers can clear procedures quickly without taking out their documents—just by looking at a green light over the smart gates. Emirates passengers in Concourse B, Terminal 3, can also check-in, go through immigration, and board flights at selected gates using facial recognition. The technology uses the latest biometrics, including facial and iris recognition. Smart gates at Dubai airport are generally contactless, but some require scanning passports or Emirates ID. UAE and Gulf nationals, residents, and eligible tourists for visa-on-arrival can use these gates if they are registered. According to the GDRFA, using smart gates helps reduce the time people spend at airports. Brigadier-General Talal Al Shanqiti mentioned that e-gates were first introduced in Dubai in 2002, upgraded to smart gates in 2017, and made contactless during the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, some were enhanced with facial recognition technology. #technology #gates #Dubai #airport #Gulf #documents

#Imagine a world where boarding a flight requires no passport, ID, or ticket. Singapore’s Changi Airport has brought this vision to life, becoming the world’s first fully passport-free airport through advanced biometric technology. As of September 30, Changi has introduced a comprehensive facial recognition clearance system across all four terminals, cutting immigration processing times by 60%. While international travelers still present passports upon arrival, they can now depart without one—biometrics handle the rest. Since implementation, over 1.5 million travelers have used this passport-free system. Passengers need only submit their SG Arrival Card three days before arrival. Launched in trials in August 2024, this pioneering system reinforces Changi Airport’s position at the forefront of airport innovation, streamlining travel like never before. #ChangiAirport #TravelTech #BiometricClearance #PassportFreeTravel #FutureOfTravel | Featured Horizon

Imagine an airport experience so seamless that you simply flow from arrival to destination—no lines, no waiting, no hassles. Dubai is making this vision a reality at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This $35 billion terminal is designed to process a staggering 260 million passengers per year, leveraging AI and advanced technologies to redefine the entire journey. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, envisions an operating model where legacy procedures fade into the background, allowing travelers to move freely through check-in, security, and immigration without interruption. This is more than innovation—it's a revolution in passenger experience. By reducing “dwell time” and using AI to eliminate bottlenecks, DWC will create the agility of a small airport on an unprecedented scale. AI has the potential to transform airports into living, intelligent ecosystems—places where data anticipates our needs, enhancing speed, security, and satisfaction. The future of aviation is here—and it's smarter, faster, and driven by AI. ✈️ #AviationInnovation #FutureOfTravel #AIAirports
