We observed personally - it has become so smart & efficient....
In 2023, more than 21 million travelers passed through passport control at Dubai airports in just minutes, which is a 55% increase from the previous year. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai revealed that these passengers used 127 smart gates at Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum International (DWC) without needing help from immigration officials. Some of the smart gates, especially at DXB Terminal 3, were upgraded in October with facial recognition features. This means travelers can clear procedures quickly without taking out their documents—just by looking at a green light over the smart gates. Emirates passengers in Concourse B, Terminal 3, can also check-in, go through immigration, and board flights at selected gates using facial recognition. The technology uses the latest biometrics, including facial and iris recognition. Smart gates at Dubai airport are generally contactless, but some require scanning passports or Emirates ID. UAE and Gulf nationals, residents, and eligible tourists for visa-on-arrival can use these gates if they are registered. According to the GDRFA, using smart gates helps reduce the time people spend at airports. Brigadier-General Talal Al Shanqiti mentioned that e-gates were first introduced in Dubai in 2002, upgraded to smart gates in 2017, and made contactless during the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, some were enhanced with facial recognition technology. #technology #gates #Dubai #airport #Gulf #documents

Imagine a $35 billion terminal built to handle 260 million travelers a year, all moving smoothly through a seamless system. And here’s the real kicker—they’re tossing out those clunky legacy processes that make travel such a pain. What does it make an airport successfull? In my personal and professional life, i have been traveling all over the world and experienced over 100 airports. More and more often i realized that one of my main decision criteria when organizing a trip is the airport i could travel to or through since this is a major element of simplification. You don’t want problem when you depart, arrive or connect. The main aspects i constantly check are the following 10s: 1 - accessibility in terms of ground transportation availability, costs and time to my point of interest 2 - security procedures in terms of speed and what you can leave in your bags (pc, liquids, etc) 3 - passports and custom check-points: automated? fast? 4 - facilities in the airport: free wifi, working spaces, food courts, duty free 5 - automated baggage self drop 6 - logistic within the airport 7 - “taxi time” of the aircraft 8 - boarding efficiency even if it often depends on the carrier 9 - waiting time for your checked-in luggage 10 - courtesy of the staff and info’s display I’m always impressed when i travel through Dubai airport, since, even if it moves 10mln/pax per month, it always matches my expectations, especially leveraging automation and tec like facial recognition. #airports #simplifybiztravel #automation
