📊 💬 ANALYSIS | New SDG 7 tracking report turns global gaze to funding boosts needed to actualize universal access to energy      🚨 The world is off track to achieving universal access to energy by 2030, according to a new multi-agency analysis by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), The World Bank, United Nations Statistics Division, World Health Organization, and the International Energy Agency (IEA).   Achieving SDG 7 targets requires a substantial increase in clean energy investments, estimated at USD 3–4.5 trillion annually by 2030. As the European Commission begins its new term, Ms Poirier-Dietz, also the CEO of GRDF emphasizes the need for pragmatic and localised approaches to decarbonisation, particularly in circular economy initiatives and the energy transition in buildings. In interview, she outlines GD4S's strategic vision on upcoming European policies. She highlighted the critical role of #biomethane, enhancing our #just energy transition toward a more #sustainable future. She also focuses on GD4S’ core objectives as set out in GD4S Manifesto 2024-2029.  Accelerating renewable gas production to achieve 35 bcm annually by 2030, with clear national targets and supportive EU frameworks. Following the global stocktaking, H.E Dennis Francis launched a Call to Action to the international community to: ↪️Deliver on extending access to electricity to over 600 million people currently without it. ↪️Provide clean cooking solutions to over 2 billion people who still rely on harmful fuels, to rapidly accelerate the transition to clean, renewable energy, in a just, orderly, and equitable manner. ↪️Dramatically scale up finance and investment for developing countries. ↪️Boost public-private partnerships, especially for technology transfer to the developing countries; in particular, Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.

Excellent roundtable discussion at #HLPF2024 on a Just Energy Transition in a SIDS Context, organized by the government of Comoros. 🇰🇲 I emphasized the opportunities to overcome existing challenges that hinder sustainable energy adoption in #SIDS 🏝️through innovative solutions: - Utilizing innovative finance mechanisms, including thematic bonds, and Debt-for-Energy transactions, to provide effective financing for SIDS' just energy transition - Enhancing policy, de-risking mechanisms and regulatory frameworks to promote greater uptake of renewables - Connecting renewables with green and blue economies to support economic diversification - Harnessing digital technologies and AI to develop informed energy resilience strategies and optimize off-grid solutions, transforming SIDS into 'digital islands’ 🏝️ - Creating an ecosystem enabling active private sector participation to boost renewable energy capacity, job creation & technology transfer Energy is pivotal in achieving the ambitious goals of the ABAS declaration. As a key partner of SIDS, UNDP's approach goes beyond conventional project development and aims at amplifying exponentially the impact of sustainable energy systems transformation on the ground to actualize these outcomes – our strategy is not just about providing energy; it’s about catalyzing #EnergyForDevelopment. ⚡️
