Indian Women Professionals in Power Sector Engage Minister to Advance Gender Equality and Renewable Energy Initiatives On February 15, 2024, a group comprising 25 mid-career women professionals from the Indian power sector met with Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh, in New Delhi. This gathering was part of WePOWER SAR100, a program aiming to train 100 women professionals from Southeast Asia in the energy sector. Among the participants, 25 were from Bangladesh, 15 from Sri Lanka, 15 from Pakistan, 10 from Maldives, and 32 from various regions of India, many of whom held positions in government power sector PSUs, regulatory commissions, or energy departments. These are all #WomeninEnergy who are involved with #UEF and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) in different capacities. They are a part of a dynamic team that is working collaboratively to accelerate energy access in energy-poor communities across Africa. On this year's #InternationalWomensDay, we celebrate the progress made by the UEF-affiliated women and recognize them as trailblazers in the energy sector, which has traditionally been a male-dominated field. Women should not be seen just as energy consumers but equal partners and professionals who can contribute significantly to energy access and the growth of the sector. UEF reiterates its commitment to gender equality and inclusivity and will continue to support women to get into the renewable energy space so they can have a seat at the clean energy table. It took me 10 months to take this photo but I'm so happy to finally have it! During the course of the year, in the scope of the SECCA Project we set up a regional network of GESI analysts in Central Asia, with whom I've worked to conduct national gender assessments, particularly in the energy sector. We looked at 4 specific dimensions: 1. Gender in energy policies 2. Access to electricity and clean fuels 3. Girls in STEM 4. Women's employment in the energy sector I met most of the colleagues finally in person last week as we presented our findings at a regional workshop on gender in energy in Central Asia, convened by SECCA in Almaty (Kazakhstan) - more on that soon. Despite national specificities, countries share a lot of regional and global challenges: from lack of gender-disaggregated data to gender-blind energy policies, and quantitative and qualitative under-representation of female professionals in the energy industry. Clean energy in the Philippines: is there an opportunity for you? According to the US International Trade Administration (ITA) (January 2024), the Philippine government envisions the country will increase its renewable energy (RE) share in the supply mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2050. A greater RE share promotes energy efficiency and conservation and provides an opportunity for emerging technologies to improve energy security. ITA estimates that 52 GW of additional power capacity will be required by 2045. Great opinion piece by ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy & The Shine Collab ⭐ A gender-just energy transition: Why it matters and how to achieve it Power to the people was the theme of a June 25 webinar sponsored by the SHINECollab, whose goal is scaling women-led, community-driven renewable energy solutions for a gender just energy transition. What is a gender-just energy transition, and why does it matter? Speakers debated the unjust nature of the existing energy system, and advocated for a transformational and decentralized approach to the energy transition, and to extractive industries generally, that would advance community-driven solutions. Celebrating International Women's Day: Empowering Women in the Renewable Energy Sector As we celebrate International Women's Day (#IWD), we remember the historical significance of this date, marking the day in 1917 when Russian women demanded "bread and peace." This day has grown to embody the struggle for women's rights worldwide, symbolized by the colors purple, green, and white, which stand for justice, hope, and purity, respectively. The theme for IWD 2024, "Invest in women: Accelerate progress" (UN) and "Inspire Inclusion" (IWD website), resonates deeply as we face the existential threat of climate change. It is imperative, now more than ever, that women increase their presence in the global workforce, particularly in sectors crucial for our future, like distributed renewable energy (DRE). The DRE sector represents an unexpected boon for gender equality, offering economic and social empowerment opportunities for women. This field not only addresses the critical transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources but also combats historical gender biases, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for clean energy (7) and gender equality (5). Power for All's research highlights this shift, showing significant female employment increases in the DRE sector within countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. However, despite these advancements, challenges persist, particularly in technical fields and societal norms that hinder women's full participation. Amidst these challenges, grassroots organizations like SHEnergy Consulting in East Africa stand out for their unwavering commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce in the #renewableenergy sector. Led by the visionary Lewam Teklu, SHEnergy not only addresses cultural and financial barriers but also champions women's advocacy, visibility, and practical training. The efforts of SHEnergy and similar organizations are pivotal as they work towards creating sustainable futures and addressing historic gender inequalities. By empowering women in the renewable energy sector, we not only tackle energy poverty but also pave the way for a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world. As we reflect on the heritage of IWD and its importance in today's context, let's commit to supporting and investing in initiatives that promote gender inclusivity and environmental sustainability. Meet Artane Rizvanolli, the driving force behind Kosovo's energy transformation. As Minister of Economy since 2021, Rizvanolli has spearheaded initiatives to boost renewable energy and efficiency. Under her leadership, Kosovo aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 32% and increase renewable energy to 35% of electricity consumption by 2031. Key projects include 200MW solar power plants, a 50MW thermal energy addition to Prishtina’s heating system, and a 150MW wind farm, plus a 170MW battery capacity through the MCC Compact Program to integrate new renewable capacities. Rizvanolli’s tenure also focuses on gender equality in the energy sector. The goal is to boost women's employment in the sector from 9% in 2021 to 25% by 2031, with significant progress already made in public enterprise leadership.
