The event enjoys broad support from religious groups across Ireland, significant civil society organizations, and senior government officials from both the Taoiseach’s Department and the Executive Office at Stormont. The goal is to create a consensus-based document to influence public debate on AI's ethical implications, which will be shared at a joint meeting in Brussels once the newly elected European Parliament and new Commission are in place. Topics to be addressed include: 1: EU Regulation of AI: Discussing the EU's detailed regulation strategy, exploring its broader digital governance context, and assessing the AI Act's framework. 2: AI in the Workplace: Examining AI's role in transforming jobs, public administration, and accountability in decision-making. 3: AI and Security: Evaluating necessary security measures and the need for international cooperation on cybersecurity and AI-related risks. 4: AI and Education: Debating the balance between computational skills and humanistic values in education, and ensuring AI's integrity in educational processes. 5: AI's Sociopolitical Impact: Analyzing AI's effects on information dissemination, manipulation via algorithms, and its broader societal implications. 6: AI and Human Identity: Discussing philosophical considerations around AI, especially in light of gene-editing and the potential existential risks highlighted by recent international statements. 7: AI and Politics: Considering AI's role in addressing global challenges and the possibility of adding a new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) focused on AI. 8: AI and Faith Communities: Discussing the potential contributions of faith-based perspectives to AI ethics discussions and the promotion of a humane future.

👌 CALL FOR PAPERS 👌 Cambridge University Press Cambridge Forum on AI: Culture and Society The journal invites submissions for its upcoming Themed Issue: #EMPIRICAL_AI_ETHICS https://lnkd.in/eg-ggJPa The issue will be Guest Edited by @Selin Gerlek and Paula Helm (University of Amsterdam). The deadline for abstract submissions is 1 March 2025. Invited full papers will be accepted on a rolling basis after they have undergone double blind peer review. "Cambridge Forum on AI: Culture & Society" has recently been founded by its acting editors-in-chief Tobias Blanke and Georgina Born. It is fully 👀 Open Access 👀 with NO APCs. https://lnkd.in/eXWyS3K3 Looking forward to your submissions, Paula & Selin. And here is the call description: "In recent years, AI has become a central force in shaping various aspects of human life, ranging from decision-making over cultural production to societal infrastructures, sparking wide-ranging ethical debates. However, classical approaches to AI ethics often rely on abstract principles and Western-centric perspectives that may overlook the lived experience of those directly and even indirectly affected by AI systems. This themed issue seeks to address these issues by focusing on empirical approaches to AI ethics, which ground ethical reflection on concrete practices, values, and experiences. Empirical AI Ethics continues the so-called empirical turn in epistemology, the humanities and beyond by connecting insights gained through qualitative and quantitative research with value considerations. The analytical focus thereby shifts from a focus on top-down ethical principles to understanding what different actors and stakeholders consider desirable and undesirable practices, whether at the individual, societal or institutional level. Empirical AI Ethics, as advanced in this themed issue, enacts a turn towards a horizontal perspective (bottom-up or from within), captured in terms like ethics in practice, fieldwork ethics, empirical philosophy, or everyday ethics. While there are several approaches to empirical ethics, this issue will present reflections inspired by lines of tradition within philosophy and anthropology that build on a situated understanding of knowledge, including science and technology studies (STS), feminist care and biomedical ethics, postphenomenology, material semiotics, and praxeology. Unlike classical AI ethics, such empirical approaches to AI ethics do not determine a priori what is good and right. Instead, enquiry focuses on the perspectives and opinions of affected communities regarding normative issues emerging vis-à-vis the implementation of AI systems within various areas of life".

This should be a good presentation on Brain Organoid science and ethics.
Excited to present this talk at the February Association for Practical and Professional Ethics meeting. Using terms like "organoid intelligence" prematurely can inadvertently foster skepticism among the general public by exaggerating the current capabilities of brain organoids. Stakeholders question scientific institutions because we fail to create an inclusive and realistic engagement environment. Scientific overpromising and underdelivering leads to public disengagement, especially in emerging fields. "Brain Organoid Intelligence: Anticipatory Ethics, Categorical Errors, and a Danger Zone For Neuroscience" The human brain exhibits highly complex cytoarchitecture and immense cellular diversity. Neural organoids provide a unique, albeit simplistic, model to study the brain in the context of human development and disease. Due to the significant growth and proliferation of brain organoid research in neuroscience over the past decade, a new area of study was proposed in 2023, termed “Organoid Intelligence (OI).” A small group of researchers, many of whom have vested financial interests in developing organoid models of computation and disease, propose that OI will result in neuromorphic computing models in a dish and may attain consciousness. Several prominent OI researchers have provided a cursory ethical analysis to accompany the development of OI, partly evoking the precautionary principle to address perceived ethical challenges to OI. The central premise of the ethical analysis is that ethical considerations should be given regarding organoid sentience. The assertion that OI is a viable outcome in brain organoids that needs a detailed ethical analysis stems from an ethical analysis rooted in Ryle’s “category mistake.” This categorical error and the erroneous ethical analysis overlook that organoids have yet to be validated to show their similarity to human in vivo neural tissue. In addition, this category error requires a reductionist conception of consciousness that expects an unguided tissue in a dish that contains approximately 200,000 neurons to recapitulate the activity of a human brain of roughly 100 billion neurons. The conflation of brain organoid models with human brains has resulted in this tissue being given attributes of personhood, which organoids do not possess. From an anticipatory ethics perspective, asserting OI without scientific evidence early in the development of brain organoid research may evoke use of the precautionary principle by diverse stakeholders at the wrong time. This will create an unnecessary and impossible burden of proof for organoid neuroscientists, creating adversarial relationships with non-scientifically oriented stakeholders. By applying caution-driven ethics and attributing OI to brain organoids too soon, the establishment of OI as a field has the unintended consequence of inducing ethical analysis based on fear and inadvertently leading to the inhibition of innovation in brain organoid research.
