  •   Though still a relatively early career publishing professional, Jay Soglo is already making an positive impact on the field. Those who have collaborated with Jay have been impressed by his leadership and generosity. In this Alumni Profile, Jay shares some of his experiences in the GW MPS in Publishing program and as an early career professional: https://lnkd.in/dxjk9y9w Jay is Production Controller at Johns Hopkins University Press (JHUP) and an outstanding graduate of the Master of Professional Studies in Publishing program, The George Washington University - College of Professional Studies. After his second semester in the GW publishing program, he started as publishing operations assistant at JHUP, and quickly demonstrated leadership in the field, moderating a successful and dynamic session on accessibility at the Association of University Presses Annual Meeting, speaking at the GW Ethics in Publishing Conference, authoring a paper published in the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing, and as a mentor to others in the field. Excerpts: “Working in a press while completing my degree was great. Not only was I learning publishing skills in the program, but many times they would come in handy immediately. For example, I started the production management course as I was promoted. Every lesson that semester was directly relevant to my job...” “All my professors were fantastic, but a special thanks to Dean Smith, whom I credit with helping me get my current job. Professor Randy Townsend MPS‘s Ethics in Publishing capstone course really made me think about ways that I can impact the industry. Randy and Professor Tony Julien, M.A are both fabulous and excellent role models. Program Director John W. Warren has been an excellent mentor from the very beginning of my time in the program. This program is one of the few where every professor is not just a good teacher, but a supportive and wonderful person.” “When I began the project [on book bans] in the summer of 2022, I wasn’t sure of the topic or angle that I wanted to take... more and more news articles about censorship and book bans were coming in regularly, and so I kept writing and researching until I had a journal article. Being on the other side of the publication process allowed me to see what it was like for the authors that we serve in this industry and gave me a more well-rounded view of scholarly publishing. I consider the publication of the article my way of pushing back on censorship and putting my voice out there – something I encourage anyone who is concerned about censorship to do as well.”   Jay Soglo’s article, Banned But Not Beaten: Confronting Book Bans from a Utilitarian Perspective, was published in the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing, Vol 3. https://lnkd.in/d8Egc_Vw

  • At the 14th GW Ethics in Publishing Conference, Editor-in-Chief Lois Jones, and committee leads Haley Baker, Cady Hockman, and Mikayla Lee provided updates about the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing, and shared how GW Publishing graduate students manage the journal and gain experience in the field. https://lnkd.in/etut7WRT Session videos and presentation slides from the Ethics in Publishing Conference 2024 are now available on the conference website. https://lnkd.in/e8GG_XvX Several alumni and students from GW's Graduate Program in Publishing presented this year, including Stella Sanchez, MPS, Stephanie Pollock, Liliann Albelbaisi, Mikayla Lee, Josephine E. Sciortino, Rachel K., and Maribel G.. The GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing invites conference presenters—and all others—to submit a paper to the journal. Many distinguished publishing professionals and researchers moderated and presented informative sessions at this year's conference, including Wendy Queen, Jennifer Regala, Edgar Garcia Valencia, Laura Rodríguez-Mejía, Casey Pickering, Mia Ricci, Cindy B. Veldhuis, PhD, Tammy Brodie, Elizabeth Brown, Natalie Culbertson, Simone Taylor, Anna Jester, Jennifer Workman, Christopher Kenneally, Bailey Harrington, PhD, Amy Hall, Kelsea Johnson, Rebecca Kennison, Marco Giraldo Barreto, Sara Cohen, Diona E. Layden, Allison Levy, La Tanya Reese Rogers (PhD), Ana Maria Jimenez-Moreno, Mae Velloso-Lyons, PhD, Leo Postovoit, Camille Lemieux, Paige Wooden, Andrew Bostjancic, and Ginny Herbert. Thanks to Liesl Riddle, PhD, CPS Dean for her afternoon welcome remarks, and for her and The George Washington University - College of Professional Studies' support of the journal and GW publishing. Thanks also to our sponsors, the Association of American Publishers (AAP), the Association of University Presses (AUPresses), Book Industry Study Group (BISG), the Council of Science Editors (CSE), the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE), the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), and Scholastica. The Ethics in Publishing Conference is co-organized by Professor Puja Telikicherla and program director John Warren. Taylor Dent served as our conference assistant. Thank you for all who attended — and please submit a presentation proposal for next year's conference (The CFP will be available in March).

  • Tia Gracey, MLA, MPS is Associate Editor for Political Science Today at the American Political Science Association (APSA). An outstanding graduate of GW's Master of Professional Studies in Publishing program (December 2023), she served valiantly as Managing Editor of our GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing, shepherding the second and third issue of the journal to publication. We are blessed with an abundance of extremely talented students in the Graduate Program in Publishing at George Washington University, and we are especially pleased to share Tia's insights, as one of our stellar graduates, in this alumni profile. See: https://lnkd.in/eiWG_hU3 She shares some of the lessons she learned as a MPS in Publishing student, as E-Publishing Committee Lead, and as Managing Editor, benefiting from the instruction of Tony Julien, M.A, Randy Townsend MPS, Lois Jones, and many others. The talent and skills of our graduate students in the Graduate program in Publishing, The George Washington University - College of Professional Studies has not gone unnoticed by employers, including Tia's manager and fellow SSP-member Jon Gurstelle. Excerpts: "This might seem contradictory, but I think the most challenging aspect of the program was the most rewarding to me. There is so much to be involved with in the Publishing program, and it is something I definitely tried to take advantage of, so trying to find a balance between doing all that I could in the program—classes, the book club, the journal—and my own capabilities was challenging." "For any new students that are considering joining a GWJEP committee, I would simply say do it if you can. The journal runs on the students’ ambitions and efforts. Without it, no issues would ever be published. If you wish to learn practical publishing skills and can manage your time well enough to gift some to the journal, then I would say put your best foot forward and go for it! I would also say to keep an open mind. Many students go into the journal wishing to be on the Editorial Committee, and I can completely understand why they do. The Editorial Committee, however, is not the only committee that makes the journal run. If you have your heart set on one committee, though, make sure to let the Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editor know so they can do their best to fit you in there." "Quite a lot of my skills I’ve learned from the classes in the program, particularly E-Publishing Tools, which taught me Adobe InDesign, and Book Design, which taught me about printing needs and requirements... Another big reason that I was able to get hired was because of my role as E-Publishing Committee Lead for the GW journal... I owe my current role to both the program and the journal." #PublishingCareers #MPSinPublishing #GWPublishing #GWJEP #GWJournalofEthicsinPublishing #SSP
