We are seeking presentation proposals for the 14th GW Ethics in Publishing Conference. The 14th GW Ethics in Publishing Conference will be held as a hybrid event on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the City View Room, GW's Foggy Bottom Campus, and online. We are seeking conference presentations from (and for) publishing, library and scholarly communication professionals, scholars, faculty, and students. Suggested topics include but are not limited to publishing equity in workplace and practice; impact of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility efforts; Artificial Intelligence (AI) and research integrity; salaries/compensation transparency/openness; publishing and press sustainability; multilingualism; accessibility; diversity, equity & inclusion; inclusive practices in language editing and design; community-centered peer review practices; and more. Alumni and current students in the GW Publishing program are invited to present their Ethics in Publishing Capstone projects or other research. Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: Impact on Qualitative Research Qualitative research has been a cornerstone in the advancement of knowledge in various disciplines, from the social sciences to the humanities. However, in the current digital era, we face new challenges and opportunities, especially with the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In this new frontier, ethics plays a crucial role, ensuring that our research is not only accurate and efficient, but also responsible and humane. In this article, we will explore how AI is transforming qualitative research and the importance of ethics in this process. Based on my recent Keynote Lecture entitled: "Ethics and Artificial Intelligence in Qualitative Research", we will break down the key concepts and practical applications that are revolutionizing our approach to scientific research today. Onesto are delighted to be able to support and contribute to the upcoming Ethics of AI meeting at Mansion House, Dublin, on April 19, 2024. https://lnkd.in/eqkUCN4r We are in good company, as the meeting will feature a notable and diverse array of participants. Key attendees include the Speaker of the Irish Parliament, the European Parliament Vice-President via video, and an MEP connected to the AI Act. Contributions will also come from EU representatives, prominent tech regulation experts, and leading Irish academic specialists in AI. The event enjoys broad support from religious groups across Ireland, significant civil society organizations, and senior government officials from both the Taoiseach’s Department and the Executive Office at Stormont.   The goal is to create a consensus-based document to influence public debate on AI's ethical implications, which will be shared at a joint meeting in Brussels once the newly elected European Parliament and new Commission are in place.   Topics to be addressed include: 1: EU Regulation of AI: Discussing the EU's detailed regulation strategy, exploring its broader digital governance context, and assessing the AI Act's framework. 2: AI in the Workplace: Examining AI's role in transforming jobs, public administration, and accountability in decision-making. 3: AI and Security: Evaluating necessary security measures and the need for international cooperation on cybersecurity and AI-related risks. 4: AI and Education: Debating the balance between computational skills and humanistic values in education, and ensuring AI's integrity in educational processes. 5: AI's Sociopolitical Impact: Analyzing AI's effects on information dissemination, manipulation via algorithms, and its broader societal implications. 6: AI and Human Identity: Discussing philosophical considerations around AI, especially in light of gene-editing and the potential existential risks highlighted by recent international statements. 7: AI and Politics: Considering AI's role in addressing global challenges and the possibility of adding a new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) focused on AI. 8: AI and Faith Communities: Discussing the potential contributions of faith-based perspectives to AI ethics discussions and the promotion of a humane future.

Words of wisdom from Claude 3: The limited engagement of philosophy in AI ethics can have several practical implications: 1. Superficial ethical guidelines: Without deep philosophical grounding, ethical guidelines for AI development and deployment may be superficial or inconsistent. They may lack the conceptual clarity and coherence that comes from systematic philosophical reasoning. 2. Unintended consequences: If the ethical implications of AI are not thoroughly thought through from a philosophical perspective, there is a greater risk of unintended negative consequences. Philosophers are trained to anticipate and reason through the long-term, systemic effects of new technologies. 3. Difficulty resolving ethical dilemmas: When AI systems face novel ethical dilemmas in real-world settings, the lack of robust philosophical frameworks can make it harder to arrive at principled resolutions. Ad hoc decisions may be made that are inconsistent or unsatisfying. 4. Inadequate policy frameworks: Policymakers looking to regulate AI may struggle to find clear ethical principles to guide their efforts if the philosophical foundations are weak. This can lead to policy that is reactive, piecemeal, or not well-grounded in ethical reasoning. 5. Public mistrust: If the ethical principles guiding AI development are seen as shallow or poorly justified, it can contribute to public mistrust and skepticism about the technology. Robust philosophical argumentation can help build public confidence. 6. Missed opportunities for ethical innovation: Philosophers don't just apply existing theories, but also create new ones. Limited philosophical engagement means fewer opportunities to develop innovative ethical frameworks tailored to the unique challenges of AI. 7. Overreliance on technical solutions: Without the broader perspective of philosophy, there may be a tendency to seek purely technical solutions to ethical problems posed by AI. But some issues may require grappling with fundamental philosophical questions about the nature of intelligence, consciousness, agency, and moral responsibility. These implications suggest that the AI ethics community would benefit from more deliberate efforts to engage philosophers and integrate philosophical methods into their work. This could involve collaborative research projects, interdisciplinary conferences and workshops, philosophy courses for AI practitioners, and public outreach efforts to bring philosophical perspectives to bear on the ethical challenges of AI. By drawing more fully on the rich resources of philosophical ethics, the field of AI ethics can develop more robust, principled, and publicly credible approaches to ensuring that artificial intelligence benefits humanity and respects our deepest values. Addressing the urgent ethical questions posed by AI is not only a technical challenge, but also a philosophical one.
