The economic damage the #LosAngeles fires have inflicted on the city is estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars--comparable in scale to the economic cost of the 9/11 attacks to #NewYorkCity, which is also facing its own #climaterisks. Imagine if the Bush administration had responded to 9/11 by essentially shrugging, turning it into a partisan political issue, declaring that they were going to downgrade our military back to the technologies of the first half of the 20th century, and denying the Islamist terrorist threat. That's not a terrible analogy for how #Trump is responding to the #climatecrisis and its darkly amusing that the American public as a whole isn't just as outraged, given the comparable scale of consequences. I think we just need to give it more time and eventually enough #Republican districts will get hit hard enough that it will become impossible for Republican policymakers to continue feigning ignorance. We will reach a tipping point of contact with reality. The political engagement needs to continue to attempt to accelerate that process but I think a major if not primary part of it is going to require more suffering, unfortunately, because we are a nation that has become absurdly self-centered to the point of self-destruction.
The Los Angeles fires showed America’s vulnerability to severe climate events – and the need to prioritize financing for climate resilient infrastructure, write Patrick Schröder and Bhargabi Bharadwaj (Chatham House Environment and Society). https://lnkd.in/dCBDCCN6

Adapting to #climatechange is key, but how do we assess how well various adaptation measures are working? To find out, MCAP worked with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to develop metrics and indicators the state of Minnesota can use to monitor its progress on various climate adaptation measures. What if we stopped using all fossil fuel based products today? Would that be enough to tackle the climate crisis? Unfortunately, no. Reason: we have already done a lot of damage. Damage that is irreversible. Although we can’t reverse it, we can manage it better. So while we do need to phase out fossil fuels. We also need to manage the existing risks. That would be there for years to come. And that’s what climate resilience is about. It’s a combination of climate mitigation & adaptation. Wrote this article for Commons recently👇 On why we need to build climate resilience.

Blair Feltmate and Anabela Bonada, PhD recently noted that since 2015, the federal government has committed about $42 billion to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and $1.9 billion to adaptation. Although there's some debate over the exact figures—$6.6 billion in adaptation by the government—one thing is clear: we need to increase our investment in adaptation efforts. Strengthening our climate adaptation is crucial for building resilience and securing a sustainable future. #ClimateAction #Adaptation https://lnkd.in/gyGtMu4C
