🌍 Navigating the Cobalt and Copper Rush: Balancing Common Good and ESG Risk Management in the DRC 🛠️
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) sits atop a rich tapestry of natural resources, including coveted minerals like cobalt and copper. However, this wealth comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to safeguarding the common good and managing ESG risks.
The rush for cobalt and copper in the DRC has brought both promise and peril. On one hand, these minerals are essential components in the production of renewable energy technologies, from electric vehicle batteries to solar panels. They hold the potential to drive innovation and combat climate change on a global scale.
However, the extraction and trade of these minerals in the DRC are often plagued by issues of environmental degradation, human rights abuses, and corruption. Communities residing near mining sites often bear the brunt of these challenges, facing displacement, health hazards, and economic exploitation.
As professionals committed to ESG risk management, it’s imperative that we address these issues head-on. We must work collaboratively with local stakeholders, government bodies, and industry players to ensure that mineral extraction in the DRC is conducted responsibly and ethically.
This means implementing robust due diligence processes, promoting transparency along the supply chain, and advocating for the protection of human rights and environmental conservation. It also entails investing in community development initiatives that empower local residents and foster sustainable livelihoods.
Ultimately, the success of cobalt and copper mining in the DRC hinges on our ability to strike a balance between economic interests and the common good. By integrating ESG principles into our operations and decision-making processes, we can navigate the complexities of this resource-rich region while safeguarding the interests of both present and future generations. #ESG#Cobalt#Copper#DRC#Sustainability#CommonGood
USOS vzw organized an excellent seminar at University of Antwerp about 'Europe and the rush to cobalt'. Congratulations to Bossissi Nkuba and Roy Maconachie, the producers of 'Cobalt Rush': the video illustrates the appalling reality of artisanal cobalt mining around Kolwezi in Congo. Great contributions during the panel discussion by Sara Geenen, Guillaume de Brier and Sarah Katz-Lavigne. Have a look at the video. The 'externalities' of the cobalt intensive energy transition are dramatic.
Sagacity Capital Media sat down with Graham Carman, President & CEO of Tinka Resources (TSXV:TK / OTC:TKRFF) to get the complete company overview in under 10 minutes, live from #PDAC2024
About Tinka Resources
Tinka's flagship property is the Ayawilca Zinc-Tin-Silver project, located 200 km north of Lima, in the Pasco region of central Peru. Ayawilca is a carbonate replacement deposit (CRD), an important style of economic silver-zinc-lead mineralization in central Peru (mines include Cerro de Pasco and Morococha – see Figure 1). The Ayawilca Zinc Zone was discovered by Tinka in 2012 and the Company has drilled ~100,000 metres at the property as of August 2023. Ayawilca has grown into one of the largest zinc-silver resources in the Americas.

Resources Minister Shane Jones talks about the value of mining, and doubling mining exports to boost the New Zealand economy, on TVNZ Q&A with Jack Tame. Mining is a small, but valuable industry in New Zealand providing high-paid jobs in the regions. But more than that, mining companies contribute to regional towns with support for schools, sports, environmental programmes, cultural and social initiatives, and life saving equipment. It is a false narrative that 'all the money goes offshore'. Minerals enable our high standard of living and we should mine what we have here responsibly. New Zealand First

🗞️Read the editorial feature here: https://lnkd.in/g9Gzw4NmAmerican West Metals Ltd is primarily a #copper explorer though it also has some zinc assets as well.
The company’s major project is the Storm copper play on Somerset Island in Nunavut, Canada, which has a resource of 17.5Mt at 1.2% copper and 3.4g/t silver and is currently being progressed through exploration and from there to development.
#AW1 has now embarked on its largest exploration season yet with more rigs, more electromagnetics and geophysics mapped out to build the existing resource and look for new copper deposits in the Storm area an beyond.
This is expected to deliver regular news flow from the exploration though O’Neill adds that the company is also doing a lot of environmental work, which will help with permitting for the project.
Already, the ongoing moving loop electromagnetic survey being carried out as part of this season has already identified a growing collection of conductive anomalies, some of which are adjacent to known copper deposits and mineralisation.
“We are also doing a lot of study work, mine study, metallurgical study, that’s very advanced and going very well and also doing a lot of planning for next year as well,” he told Stockhead.
The company is also planning to get a sea lift to site this year that will get fuel and heavy equipment to site, which is expected to save considerable amounts on next year’s costs.
