It's rather exciting seeing electric light aircraft like this come to the market. As batteries start hitting 400Wh/kg and beyond, it seems there's a clear route to electrification in general aviation. They are quieter, have more reliable motors, fewer moving parts, have instant power response, no carbon monoxide risks, no lead in fuel plus the potential for a massive reduction in cost per flying hour.

Zero-emission aviation is already a reality! Great to experience my first time inside a certified fully-electric aircraft (the Pipistrel Velis Electro) when envAero visited the Sustainable Skies World Summit in Farnborough today. Coincidentally, this aircraft has the exact same ChadeMo charge port and an almost identical battery capacity as the Nissan Leaf I drove to the event in this morning… Much in common with Future of Flight UAS and eVTOL operations, to enable Jet Zero at scale the aviation industry still faces some huge and exciting challenges to overcome, including technological, safety and economic regulation, supporting infrastructure (ground, airspace, ATM, energy) and economic. But sitting inside this operational aircraft I’ve never been more convinced that together we will all make it happen. Electra has introduced its EL9 Ultra Short hybrid-electric aircraft, marking a significant leap in regional air travel. Designed for nine passengers, this piloted aircraft promises a future free of airports, emissions, and noise. Following successful flight tests with its EL2 Goldfinch prototype, Electra is now developing the EL9. At CES 2025, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian emphasised the importance of eVTOL aircraft and hydrogen fuel in creating a sustainable future for commercial aviation. Through a partnership with Joby Aviation, Delta aims to integrate eVTOLs for seamless city-to-airport transport, debuting in NYC and LA.  “Joby is a new breed of aircraft. This isn’t a distant future we’re talking about—we expect Joby to be flying in the next few years,” said Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian in his keynote.
