Lessons from Winston-Salem’s Controversial Hydroponic Farm: Issues and Community Impact Winston-Salem’s $2.5 million investment in a hydroponic farm to address food insecurity has been fraught with problems. Originally scheduled to open in 2018, the project faced delays and cost overruns and eventually opened in 2022 under the management of local nonprofit H.O.P.E. Despite growing lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes, the farm struggles to achieve its original goal of providing enough food for the population. A hydroponic farm in Kimberley Park run by H.O.P.E. (Help Our People Eat), based in Winston-Salem, has shifted its mission from selling microgreens to upscale restaurants to distributing meals to food-insecure residents. However, farm productivity remains insufficient, forcing H.O.P.E. supplement your supplies with purchases from other sources. Critics, including city council members and local residents, have raised concerns about the project’s efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Starting a Seaweed Farm Post #2 in the Series. For those of you that know me, you know that I'm not an Aquaculture expert of Marine Biologist (if you think I am then awesome). How the hell does one get started to build a seaweed farm? In Most of my previous businesses I've never had a cofounder (maybe another post on that 😀) but for this venture I needed someone who knows the system and most importantly can grow the seaweed. 1. I basically typed in 'Seaweed' into LinkedIn which showed a list of about 40 people in Australia 2. I began adding them all machine gun style. With a note saying "I'm looking to start a seaweed farm, looks like you know a bit about this area. Keen to chat?" 3. I set up phone call meetings with anyone I could. 4. I met with a bunch of amazing people building seaweed farms Including Fremantle Seaweed (Chris is an absolute legend!) 5. Chris told me I should meet someone called "Neil" who wanted to start something similar about 5 years ago and is also a marine biologist. 6. I call Neil. I explain to him that I have this dream and that my strategic vision is to focus on dry food product and also cosmetics due to the high profit margin. I told him I wanted to be the 'Tesla' of seaweed farming. Sell high. profit first before moving to the masses/scaling. 7. Neil and I grab coffee and hit it off. We discuss where we should be focused on, and how we will make it happen. 8. This was 2 years ago! So far we've. 1. Launched a consumer brand food product, 2. Build a seaweed drying room, 3. Sourced a drying partner, 4. Partnered with a mussel farmer named Harry, 5. Built a laboratory to grow our baby seaweed and 6. Working on a cosmetic product that we plan to bring to market. I can tell you right now that starting a seaweed farm is HARD. There are endless challenges (environment, market, etc). BUT the benefit of doing this is incredibly rewarding, I'm literally creating my dream business. I get to learn everyday, I get to be close to the ocean (my happy place) and there's incredible upside for the world if we can get it right (carbon removal & biodiversity for the ocean). The VIII Global Conference of the WRF concludes with a Final Declaration that recognises the “vital” role of family farmers for a sustainable planet The final declaration of the VIII World Conference states that “five years ago, the United Nations declared the Decade of Family Farming an important milestone. Today, aspirations of family farmers are clearly visible and our proposals are concrete. As crises shape up and challenges become more acute, family farming organisations emerge with greater strength to be the solution that the world needs. “We need catalytic actions that improve the lives of family farmers while ensuring a sustainable future for all.” The VIII Global Conference on Family Farming, celebrated from March 19-21, organised by the World Rural Forum, convened more than 200 representatives of leading family farming organisations, regional platforms, governments, international bodies, research centres, consumer, philanthropic, women’s and youth organisations, as well as National Family Farming Committees from the five continents.
