“For the sake of a secure national economy, a strong research workforce, and an innovative scientific enterprise that serves everyone, our HBCUs need dynamic research programs that offer graduate degrees and set students up for leadership roles. We can’t afford to leave talent on the table,” said Joyce T. Shirazi, dean of the School of Engineering, Architecture and Aviation at Hampton University, an HBCU, and co-chair of the first annual HBCU Engineering Deans Summit held at the University of Michigan over the summer. The summit brought together HBCU and R1 engineering schools to discuss ways to work together to expand research programs at HBCUs, identifying four key steps to make an impact: understand, align, partner, and sustain. “We’ve come up with real, actionable steps that we believe can benefit everyone," said Lola Eniola-Adefeso, PhD, FAHA, FAIMBE, FBMES, FCRS,NAI, co-chair of the Summit as Michigan Engineering’s associate dean for graduate and professional education. Lake County leaders including Lakeland Community College President Dr. Sunil Ahuja were recently invited to Columbus by Senator Jerry Cirino. The group highlighted successful workforce development initiatives to the Ohio Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee, showcasing efforts that secured over $16 million in competitive grants for manufacturing, healthcare, IT and engineering. Their approach centers on three pillars - collaboration, innovation and strategic expansion - exemplified through programs like the Mentor Fire EMT Academy and Classic Automotive Training Center, which partner with local businesses and institutions to maximize resources. The initiatives have shown impressive results, including record-breaking College Credit Plus enrollment at Lakeland Community College and a 99% placement rate for Career Technical Education graduates within six months of completion. #LakelandCC 📽️ https://buff.ly/4fJKu5k

How would you spend $500 to prototype your own stadium!? Our engineering and manufacturing students have been working hard to design and build a stadium of the future for the NFL Stadium of the Future STEM Challenge. Our students will present their work on Thursday at Bank of America stadium. Special thanks to Trane Technologies and the Carolina Panthers for inspiring our students and providing this incredible opportunity- the students gain so much from authentic project based learning like this experience. Another huge shout out to the ACE Mentor Program of Charlotte especially Enya Schumacher, PE and Darik Schumacher who guided students with valueable presentation feedback and expertise! Check out their amazing work in the video below—let’s go, Titans!
