This week curiosity and science will meet again at HSVA’s Large Towing Tank . Having investigated and developed a lot towards consistent propulsion evaluation, we trip the flow on the propellers in best case to a fully turbulent flow pattern even at low Reynolds numbers. To do so we apply turbulators (see white “swallows” near the leading edge) provided by MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) within the Tripping JIP on two propellers, one conventional and one unconventional tip-rake design (developed within the German research project DeffProForm, https://lnkd.in/eZZ9e4kf). We perform comparative open water tests to check the influence of the turbulators on the propeller performance. We are more than curious about the upcoming results and we will keep you updated.

The research vessel RV Flip is the only vessel in the world capable of shifting from horizontal to vertical position in the middle of the ocean. Flip is not a small ship, it is about 108 meters long and weighs 700 tons Engineers designed it to be able to move to a vertical position with 90 degrees straight, so that the front of the ship at the top is 17 meters high (i.e. a 5-storey building high) while at the bottom is submerged 91 meters long, i.e. that most of the ship is submerged underwater. Which helps the ship's stability and resistance to waves, the transformation process takes about 30 minutes, in which the seawater is pumped into huge tanks in the back of the ship, which makes it sink into the water to become the ship in a vertical position, and this ship is considered one of the most important ships in the field of scientific research of seas and oceans.

Underwater Radiated Noise: research project HyPNoS reveals ways to preserve underwater life | International shipping is increasingly exploring measures to conserve and protect underwater life. To this end, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is proposing the future monitoring of Underwater Radiated Noise (URN), which may lead to the establishment of thresholds combined with long-term monitoring requirements for certain regions. In the HyPNoS (Hydrodynamic Propeller Noise Monitoring System) research project, international propulsion specialist SCHOTTEL, together with project funder Transport Canada - Transports Canada and partner BC Ferries, investigated the emission of URN from ship propulsion systems in the waters off Vancouver, Canada. The focus was on developing methods for measuring, predicting and reporting URN and deriving optimized design measures to reduce it. The research now culminates in the development of an on-board, real-time URN reporting system for crew and vessel operators. Dear Friends and Collegues, the International Journal of Energetic Materials and Chemical Propulsion Volume 23, Issue 4, 2024, pp. 1-28 DOI: 10.1615/IntJEnergeticMaterialsChemProp.2024050797 just published our Paper SHORT OVERVIEW AND HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HISTORY OF THE GERMAN GEL PROPULSION RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES Helmut K. Ciezki, Karl Wieland Naumann, Jürgen Hürttlen, Maxim Kurilov, Christoph Kirchberger, Volker Weiser, Uwe Schaller, Norman Hopfe, Pedro Caldas-Pinto, Jürgen Ramsel, & Sebastian F. Rest You can get the paper also online via the website of the journal at Begell House Digital Library. The paper presents a comprehensive status report on the technology of highly controllable rocket motors and gas generators. Key characteristics are less toxic propellants and exhaust products and a very low hazard potential. The paper also outlines examples for potential applications. Many references provide access to more information on the single subjects.
