Formula 1 is making significant strides towards sustainability with its first investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as part of its commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2030. SAF offers a remarkable 80% reduction in emissions compared to conventional aviation fuel. By utilizing SAF for its chartered cargo flights through a ‘book and claim’ system, Formula 1 is not only mitigating its environmental impact but also fostering the adoption of sustainable practices within the aviation industry. This initiative is part of a comprehensive sustainability strategy that includes optimizing logistics and reducing emissions across all operations. It was a pleasure to speak at the Ishka: Aviation Finance Festival in Dublin and discuss the challenges of decarbonizing the skies. Among other topics, we tackled several pressing questions: 1. The Peak: With the UK Government and other EU associations expecting 2019 to be the peak year of aviation emissions, is this target feasible? When do we expect emissions to peak before they begin to decline? 2. SAF: Can Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production scale up quickly enough to align with ICCT scenarios for aviation to meet the Paris Agreement targets? 3. Economic Benefit of Aviation: Is there still doubt about the economic benefits of aviation, or is the industry failing to communicate them effectively? 4. Regulation: We all agree that greenwashing is a problem, but can regulators agree on what can and cannot be said about SAF benefits? 5. EU Taxonomy: How important will it be for lessors to align with the EU Taxonomy? 6. Collaboration: What more can we do, and in what areas, to increase collaboration among industry stakeholders to achieve the net zero target? Joined by my industry colleagues Teresa Mafalda Gonçalves, Jan Melgaard, Patrick Edmond 🇺🇦 and moderated by Eduardo Mariz Cortiñas, we had a productive debate on the path to building a net-zero aviation industry. #sustainability #netzero2050 #aviation #greenaviation

Back in 2022, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team became the first global sports team to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel and SAFc certificates. We did so as part of our commitment to address as first priority the biggest sources of our emissions footprint - and to build awareness and recognition for this fledgling market. Things have changed a lot in the past two years, and today we announced our commitment to achieve x4 aviation emissions reduction in 2025, compared to our first step in 2022. In concrete terms, that means we will invest in over 10,000 tCO2e of SAF next year - which represents roughly 40% of our Race Team Control emissions. We are powering towards a bright and more sustainable future in Formula One, working together with incredible technology leaders like PETRONAS, and we will pioneer sustainable fuels on track, on the road and in the air - as well as continuing to grow our commitments to greater circularity and biodiversity. Some may say "why bother when you're racing in circles?" but it's the power of our platform to make a difference and inspire others, that makes these efforts worth it. That, and walking the talk when it comes to delivering on our commitments, by demonstrating that if F1 can race to reduce its carbon impact, then so can many other industries!
We’re proud to announce our commitment to quadruple our aviation emissions reduction by the end of 2025 - thanks to our investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates (SAFc). Our goal is to become the most sustainable sports team in the world. Last year, we more than doubled our emissions reduction, and now we’re pushing even further. With over 27,500 tonnes of carbon emission reductions targeted from 2022 to 2025 through SAFc investments, we’re leading the race towards a greener future.
