The fourth case study in our spotlight series highlights Oklahoma’s long-standing emergency response system. The Regional Medical Response System/Healthcare Coalition is informed by previous disaster response, exhaustive training, and fostered relationships with emergency partner networks and health care. The RMRS/HCC successfully coordinates across hospitals, state partners, and local health departments to share resources, data, and staff, enhancing preparedness for health crises and natural disasters alike. Special thanks to Zakia Yazdanipour and Rachel Franklin for sharing their time and expertise throughout the creation of this case study and for their ongoing leadership in this work. Resilience Planning Great to see Cardiff and Vale University Health Board maintaining their skills and knowledge to respond to a major incident. Skill fade is real. If we don’t practice these things, we forget. If we don’t teach new staff they won’t be ready. If we don’t work across our siloes we won’t be able to best support each other. Resilience planning can be challenging for large organisations but it’s necessary to eradicate harm. Da iawn pawb.
It was great to see so many colleagues from across the health board take part in a Major Incident Tabletop Exercise last week. The Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) team hosted the 25th June to test the health board’s major incident plan and develop colleagues' awareness and preparedness in responding to major incidents. The day saw colleagues come together from departments across the health board such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care, Radiography, Primary Care and Chaplaincy. Throughout the day, colleagues were put to the test as they responded to a complex and rapidly changing scenario at strategic, tactical and operational levels. Together, colleagues had to consider what action they would take to save lives, prevent harm and relieve suffering while maintaining normal services.

Excited to announce that I’ve successfully completed a course on Introduction to Emergency Response Framework🚨World Health Organization This course delved into the Grades of Emergency, WHO's Role in Responding to Emergencies, and the WHO Emergency Response Framework (ERF), offering a comprehensive understanding of how global health emergencies are managed. Key takeaways include: - Grades of Emergency: Understanding the classification of emergencies and the corresponding levels of response required. - WHO’s Role: Insight into how WHO coordinates and leads global responses, ensuring effective resource allocation and technical assistance during crises. - ERF: A deep dive into WHO’s structured approach to emergency management, highlighting the importance of preparedness and swift action. This knowledge has been invaluable in broadening my perspective on global health and emergency response. I'm eager to apply these insights to contribute to more resilient healthcare systems and effective emergency management. #HealthcareManagement #EmergencyPreparedness #WHO #GlobalHealth #ProfessionalDevelopment #IncidentManagement

Bolstering Support for Our Healthcare Heroes! 💙 Thank you to our St. Joseph’s Health Emergency Management, Behavioral Health, and Safety and Security leadership for presenting at the NJEPA - New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Association Conference in Atlantic City and discussing, “After Care for Healthcare Providers Post Active Shooter Incidents.” In the face of rising attacks on healthcare professionals, our providers often are left to deal with the aftermath without proper backup. But our team has tackled the issue head-on by: ✔️ Digging into how we can better support our providers; ✔️ Scrutinizing the effectiveness of existing aftercare programs; and ✔️ Pushing for better resilience and preparedness efforts. When our healthcare providers thrive, so does patient care and the overall health of our community. #StJosephsHealth #QualityStartsHere #ItsWhatsInsideUs
