What makes your team special? The Crusaders are arguably the most successful rugby team in the world. They’ve won 14 Super Rugby championships, produced more All Blacks, more All Black captains, and more All Blacks coaches than any other team. So it might be surprising to hear that champion coach Robbie Deans, who led the team from 2000-2008, says the rugby’s easy. For Robbie, the thing that sets the Crusaders apart is not their technical/tactical skills. His first job is to create an environment where the players are ready to immerse. Where they’re fully present, engaged, and connected. And it’s from that place that the Crusaders play great rugby. This concept applies to team leaders in any environment. We often think our job is to focus on technical skills, when our first job is to create the environment where our teams are ready to give their all for each other. How do you know when you’re doing a good job? For Robbie Deans, the answer is surprising but simple, “It’s in the eye contact.” And that’s not just on the training field — it’s everywhere. Whenever you’re around your people, whether you’re in a meeting room, passing them down the corridor… And it also holds true for how your players feel about each other. “If you’re getting eye contact, you’re getting connection, you’re getting engagement… and everything comes from that.” In Robbie’s experience, “you don’t tend to get eye contact if you don’t have respect. We want that level of honesty and that comfort, to have a context where players and management are comfortable being challenged.” "Whether things are going well, whether they're not going well, the eyes are the giveaway." Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: A good football team relies more on harmonious coordination of effort than individual skill. Teamwork is a “cooperative effort by the members of a team to achieve a common goal.” The key words in the definition are cooperative effort. Without the support of the entire group, no team can long endure. Football players quickly learn that no member of the team can be a star in every play. Most moments of glory are built upon a long series of plays, each won by committed, determined, bone-jarring blocking and tackling. A winning team is one whose members recognize that when one member of the team is successful, the entire team wins. Conversely, a sure way to develop a losing formula is to create an environment in which team members compete with one another instead of the opponent. When all members give their best in every situation—whether they are carrying the ball or clearing the way for someone else—the team wins and so does each individual member of it.
