📣 Following a successful campaign by A Scotland That Cares, a coalition campaign backed by over 70 organisations including leading Scottish charities, think tanks and trade unions, the Scottish Government has proposed a new, dedicated National Outcome on care. Once finalised it will make Scotland one of the first countries in the world to make such an explicit and comprehensive commitment to driving and transparently measuring progress on how care and, crucially, those who look after someone, are valued. 🗳️ First introduced in 2007, the Scottish Government’s National Performance Framework (NPF) includes eleven National Outcomes, the goals which it says describe ‘the kind of Scotland’ it wishes to create. 🌟The draft new National Outcomes recommended by Scottish Ministers have today been lodged at the Scottish Parliament for scrutiny by MSPs before being finalised, and they include a new National Outcome on Care, which states ‘We are cared for as we need throughout our lives and value all those providing care’. As well as covering care at all stages of a person’s life, the new National Outcome will cover everyone with caring responsibilities in Scotland; from unpaid carers looking after friends and family, including young carers, to parents looking after children and paid social care and childcare workers. 🌟 #CareForCarers #ScottishGovernment #SupportCarers #ScotlandCares

This is such an important issue and needs to be viewed widely and discussed extensively. Clearly, some charity boards are populated with people for whom there need be no consideration about paying them...in fact, it is the volunteering act of contributing their time and expertise which defines the point of having them engage with the organisation in the first place. But the problem is that too many charity boards are only comprised of such people, meaning that key voices are not at the table...and making sure that they are there going forward is a critical topic which every board needs to review and then make conscious decisions and implement concrete plans.

The Household Support Fund has been a lifeline for the people we support. Hundreds reach out to us every week needing immediate help with food, household bills and essential items; families with a broken fridge-freezer that can no longer store essential medication, or people escaping domestic abuse who need the basics for a new home. Scrapping this fund will only intensify pressure on local authorities and overwhelmed charities already helping with essentials like food, clothing, and utilities. For the 2023–24 income year, lodge between 1 July and 31 October 2024. Self-Assess Your Main Purpose: Your organisation's main purpose must be a community service purpose. Altruistic purposes that benefit the wellbeing of others qualify. Political or lobbying purposes do not qualify. Example of Eligibility: Eligible: The Hill Community Club, which supports community activities and provides networking opportunities, qualifies as its main purpose is to improve community welfare. Ineligible: Young Leaders Association, focusing on professional development and leadership for its members, does not qualify as its main purpose is not community service. Ensure your organisation meets the criteria before lodging your return.
