Kogi seeks FG’s intervention as flood ravages communities 14th October 2024 Kogi State is facing a devastating flood crisis, with 70 communities severely affected. The state government has appealed to the Federal Government for urgent intervention to mitigate the disaster. The situation is dire, with thousands of residents displaced and vital infrastructure destroyed. Addressing journalists at Kotonkarfe in Kogi Local Government on Monday, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, warned that a major “humanitarian crisis is brewing in the state, with close to two million people currently homeless". He said, “The National Emergency Management Agency cannot afford to wait any longer” as the State is already overwhelmed. “We are in a dire emergency situation at the moment, and this is tragic. The flood disaster here is devastating, with over 200 communities already submerged and close to two million people displaced". “As we speak, nine of the 21 Local Government Areas in the state are affected, which is almost 50% of the total number of Local Government Areas. We have opened about 68 IDP camps, but they cannot accommodate such a massive population. Schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure have been completely destroyed". “Seeing the elderly and young children in such distress is heartbreaking. We have not lost any lives because we activated the early warning and awareness plan. However, we are spending huge resources daily, but it is inadequate. We call on the Federal Government, international donor agencies, NGOs, and philanthropists to come to our aid", he said. The flood has ravaged communities in the Kogi Local Government Area, including Edeha, where the state's Deputy Governor, Joel Salifu, conducted an inspection tour. Salifu was accompanied by the Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, and other members of the flood committee. Residents have been forced to flee their homes, seeking shelter on higher ground. The flood has also destroyed crops, livestock, and essential infrastructure, leaving many without access to basic necessities. The Kogi State Government's appeal highlights the need for swift action to address the flood crisis. The Federal Government must provide urgent assistance to affected communities, including relief materials, medical aid, and infrastructure repair.

FLOOD DEVASTATION: SWUYN APPEALS FOR AID AND SOLIDARITY WITH AFFECTED COMMUNITIES. The Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths in Nigeria (SWUYN) is deeply concerned about the recent flood disaster that has ravaged several states in Nigeria, particularly Maiduguri, Borno State, resulting in the loss of lives, properties, and displacement of businesses. Severe flooding in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, has resulted in: - At least 30 deaths - 400,000 people forced from their homes - 1 million people affected - Widespread destruction of homes, vehicles, and livestock - Fears of waterborne diseases rising The disaster follows a recent dam collapse in Borno State, submerging a quarter of Maiduguri. We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and stand in solidarity with the affected communities. The devastating impact of this disaster is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our nation to natural disasters. SWUYN appeals to the government, corporate organizations, and individuals to provide urgent succour and shelter to the displaced persons and affected communities. We also urge the government to take immediate action to address the root causes of flooding and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. In addition, SWUYN offers the following contemporary solutions: 1. Investment in flood control infrastructure and wetland restoration. 2. Implementation of sustainable urban planning and development policies. 3. Provision of climate-resilient housing and infrastructure for affected communities. 4. Support for agricultural insurance schemes to cushion the effects of flood on farmers. We believe that with collective efforts, we can mitigate the effects of natural disasters and build a more resilient Nigeria. Comrade Preye V. Tambou National President, SWUYN

At DCPM, we specialize in guiding councils through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) process. Our services cover everything from preparation to reimbursement claims, easing the burden of complex and time-sensitive tasks after natural disasters. The article below serves as evidence of the significant demand for services like ours. Frustration Mounts as Victorian Councils Await Flood Repair Funding Assessments The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) is questioning the efficiency of Victoria's disaster payment system as flood repair works remain unfinished 18 months after the devastating events of 2022. Councils, like Pyrenees Shire Council, are stuck in limbo awaiting state government assessments, leaving ratepayers and leaders frustrated. Councils, grappling with the aftermath of floods and recent bushfires, are stretched thin. The slow assessment process, described as "laborious" by MAV president David Clark, calls for urgent reform. While governments have provided support, delays persist due to the scale of disasters and strict claim guidelines. With winter approaching, councils face challenges completing essential road repairs. It's time for a comprehensive review of the system to ensure prompt support for communities in need. Collaboration and streamlined processes are crucial for effective disaster recovery. #DRFA #DisasterRecovery #ProjectManagement #CouncilSupport #Vic https://lnkd.in/gZsbVdvR

At the 2018 conference in Baltimore, MD, convened by the #AllHealersMentalHealthAlliance and the #21stCenturyBlackFamilySummit organizations, I was deeply inspired by the mission to address the disaster relief challenges faced by faith-based and community-based organizations. The gathering of about 30 organizations, all dedicated to helping families in their communities navigate the trauma of disastrous events, was a testament to the power of collective action. My goal for being there was to understand, develop, and provide culturally based services in a “whole of the community” approach and gather research information on using artificial intelligence (#AI) as a force multiplier to deliver physical and emotional relief services to distressed communities. (That’s a whole other story.) I continue to learn and understand the language around disaster response and disaster recovery activities, which has helped me to develop a philosophy that supports non-profits in developing the ability and capabilities to help their residential and business neighbors with long-term recovery. I have since discovered that emergency management and disaster management services are more complex than physics. I began to see that the complexity was due to their “everything everywhere at once” effect on the human condition. This effect refers to the simultaneous and often overwhelming nature of the challenges that can destabilize the best-made plans. It became more apparent to me that many residential and business members in the community also had competing socioeconomic forces that limited the resources available for them to prepare adequately, respond to, and recover from events that affect their daily lives. During emergency scenarios, community resilience hubs #CRHs can become vital in building resistance to the harmful effects of declared disasters by creating a hardened facility. In the case of CRHs, 'hardened' refers to having access to critical infrastructure, i.e., clean water, uninterruptable power, and stable communication, that provides standalone functionality at the facility for a minimum of 10 consecutive days. This term 'hardened' underscores the robustness and self-sufficiency of these hubs, ensuring they can continue to operate even in the most challenging conditions. This is what makes Governor Wes Moore’s $9.2 million renewable energy program for Maryland colleges and universities so important. During everyday activities, these community resilience hubs can act as a gateway to developing the workforce and the talents required to support the continuity of services in their community. CRHs can provide a location to house CERT and other responder community members, i.e., FD, PD, EMT/EMS personnel, and collaborate with trusted community partners on plans to coordinate response and recovery activities for more timely and equitable distribution of relief resources, as well as provide the foundation to build and maintain resilient communities.
"The main problem with flood recovery, according to Towbin, is that the people who are the most overwhelmed and overworked — town officials and flood-affected residents — are the people responsible for picking up the pieces, without much financial or logistical support. While he said he’s thankful for grants and Federal Emergency Management Agency aid that Plainfield has received since the 2023 floods, it’s not enough to fund recovery, let alone prepare the town for the future." https://lnkd.in/excXFTWs When it's more evident than ever we need the Disaster Management Cost Modernization Act to empower communities to prepare for the most complicated part of disasters- recovery.

Fewer Vermonters applied for FEMA flood aid this year than in 2023. Could the need be higher? Advocates pointed to red tape, confusion over eligibility and mistrust of FEMA as reasons Vermonters may not have applied this year. FEMA emphasized its extensive outreach efforts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has received 2,274 applications for aid connected to flooding in mid-July, far below the number it received for flooding a year earlier. The deadline to apply for Individual and Household Program aid for the 2024 flooding was Monday. FEMA data shows that of the Vermonters who applied to the program this year, about 1,547 of them have had their applications approved so far, totaling $8.7 million in aid. By comparison, more than 6,100 people applied to FEMA in 2023, and more than 3,600 had their applications approved, according to FEMA data. Lamoille, Caledonia and Washington counties had the most applications received and the most aid distributed thus far for the 2024 floods. The tally of this year’s approvals is likely to rise in the coming months as FEMA works through more complex aid requests and appeals. William Roy, the federal coordinating officer for both disasters, said a “handful” of applications are likely still left over from the 2023 floods, more than 16 months later. Disaster preparedness is crucial for flood-prone areas in developing countries, such as Kenya, where the devastating effects of flooding are becoming increasingly common. The current floods in Kenya serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive disaster prevention measures, including early warning systems, improved infrastructure, and community training. With climate change exacerbating the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, it is essential that government officials, NGOs, and local communities work together to develop and implement effective disaster preparedness plans. By investing in preparedness measures, such as flood barriers, evacuation plans, and emergency supplies, vulnerable communities can minimize the loss of life and property when disaster strikes. Additionally, education and awareness campaigns can help to empower individuals to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families in the event of a flood. In order to mitigate the impact of future floods in Kenya and other developing countries, collaboration and coordination amongst all stakeholders is essential to ensure a more resilient and prepared population.
