🙌 Introducing the #DrasticProject’s Norwegian Demonstrator 🙌 Drastic’s Nordic Demonstrator aims to explore and demonstrate the use of reclaimed timber for innovative purposes in temporary commercial buildings, promote the use of sustainable and circular construction practices, and extend the lifespan of timber within the European construction industry. ♻️ The project also aims to advance wood grading standards in Norway and Europe. This initiative is led by three key Drastic partners: Omtre, Produktif, and TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology. In the spring and summer of 2025, reclaimed wood from various abandoned barns across Norway will be graded, tagged, and used to construct a tool shed in Hønefoss, Norway. This shed will stand for at least a year, after which it will be dismantled, and the materials will be stored for future reuse. These physical processes will also connect with other digital solutions provided by Drastic, streamlining sustainability assessments, diagnosis and quality checks and traceability over multiple (re)use cycles. This Demonstrator aims to prove that with the right approach, the right people and the right integration, reclaimed timber can have multiple lives and create many new beginnings. Drastic is a pioneering initiative that aims to demonstrate affordability, sustainability and circularity within the built environment via a collection of innovative European pilot projects known as 'Demonstrators’. 📽 Watch to learn more about Drastic’s Nordic Demonstrator: https://bit.ly/4halYvP ➡ Learn more about this Demonstrator: https://bit.ly/3Wg2tZf #CircularEconomy #BuildingTheTransition #BoldOnBuildings World Green Building Council, European Commission, Sorigué, Adec Global SL, Alliance HQE - GBC, CELSA GROUP, Saint-Gobain, TECNALIA Research & Innovation, ICADE, LEZAMA DEMOLICIONES, Madaster, Omtre, Produktif, TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, Timbeco, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Maastricht Sustainability Institute, VITO, CAALA, Saint-Gobain Ecophon AB, Clipper Coramine (Saint-Gobain), Saint-Gobain Research Paris, Saint-Gobain Weber Deutschland

🚢 Last Tuesday, Prof. Richard Bucknall from UCL, a valued MarRI-UK academic member, had the honor of presenting at the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) Future of Ships, Shipping, and Environmental Sustainability Conference in Southampton. His presentation, "How Cooperative Research and Innovation is Fueling the Future of Maritime," highlighted the pivotal role of collaboration in driving the maritime industry towards a sustainable and net-zero future. Our Core Project on the life cycle assessment of alternative marine fuels ( #LCA-AF) was also introduced to the audience, showcasing our commitment to sustainable solutions. This project is a collaborative effort between the University of Southampton and UCL (Seyedvahid Vakili, AFNI; Dr Alan J Murphy; Stephen Turnock; Wenlong Gaozhang; Nana Kutin; Yuanchang Liu; Peng Wu; Richard Bucknall), together with MarRI-UK industry members. Richard expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “An excellent event that brought academics, industry, and government representatives to discuss the challenges of repairing and improving the maritime environment as the shipping industry transitions towards a new era of sustainability and net-zero economy.” We are proud to be part of such transformative discussions and to contribute to the future of sustainable maritime practices. 🌊 #IMarEST #FutureOfShipping #MaritimeInnovation #Sustainability #NetZero

Interesting morning side event at the UN Ocean Decade conference. Technology and innovation showcase - a side event organised by the Schmidt Ocean Institute and supported by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST). The event consisted of a series of pitches and reverse pitches against a number of the ocean decade challenges by innovators. The reverse pitches talked about the need for technology innovation. Each pitch was limited to 3 minutes they were followed by a panel discussion The innovation pitches ranged from Fugro communicating how it is decarbonising its oceanic research shipping vessels, to the Ocean Data Network showcasing how it is leveraging fishing vessels for depth measurements to expand the global ocean observing network. The reverse pitches included Wildaid Marine Programme advocating for tech innovations in Marine Protected Area (MPA) enforcement, emphasising the need for accessibility, scalability, and practicality; to Ocean Visions seeking ocean based solutions to climate change and helping them with the four R's [Repair, Remove, Reduce, Reach] The panel discussion (including Ralph Rayner - IMarEST Fellow) emphasised the importance of innovation, funding, and data utilisation in addressing ocean challenges. Collaboration across sectors was highlighted as crucial for accelerating progress towards a sustainable blue economy - in particular the need to communicate to non- scientific communities, and the need to move more rapidly was also emphasised. #IMarEST #OceanDecade #Technology #Innovation 🌊🌏

Tyre quality equals tyre traction, and tyre traction matters. It is important for good road grip and thus has an impact on traffic safety. But tyre traction also has an impact on noise and road wear. In other words, there is a conflict of goals. Is it possible to optimize and find a balance? https://lnkd.in/gWJJjftU
🚗 Tyre quality – goal conflict or goal confluence? 🚗 Tyre quality equals tyre traction, and tyre traction matters. It is important for good road grip and thus has an impact on traffic safety. But tyre traction also has an impact on noise and road wear. In other words, there is a conflict of goals. Is it possible to optimize and find a balance? At the Via Nordica 2024 Congress, there will be session discussing this exact problem. The panel will consist of several professionals from the field, who will each offer their different perspectives on the subject. Moderator Anne Eriksson, Chair of NVF's working group on Road Safety, Engineer, Danish Road Directorate Introducer to the subject by Mattias Hjort, Senior Research Leader at VTI, Sweden Expert panel: Karl Idar Gjerstad, Research leader for project NorDust Nordic Road Dust Research Project 2, Norwegian Public Roads Administration Jakob Fryd.
