📅 Carers Week is taking place from Monday 10th June until Sunday 16th June 2024. ⬇️ If your organisation employs carers or is interested in learning how to support carers so you can retain them as employees should they take on that responsibility in the future, we recommend downloading our carers guide. The guide aims to provide Inclusive Employers members with an insight into the challenges that carers face and what support employers and line managers can provide to support employees who are carers in the workplace. For example, did you know that while being a carer is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010, employees may still be protected under other protected characteristics? Those who experience unfair treatment at work for being a carer are also protected under the Equality Act 2010 through direct discrimination, discrimination by association, harassment and/or victimisation. Carers Week 2024 is taking place this week. It is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. Today is Carers Rights Day and here in the UK people who care got family members or friends with disabilities, chronic illness or age related issues have specific rights under the law. Legal entitlements within the workplace include: The Right to Flexible Working Carers employed in the UK have the legal right to request flexible working arrangements, such as remote work, part-time hours, or adjusted schedules. Right to Time Off for Emergencies Carers who are employees are entitled to a reasonable amount of unpaid leave to deal with emergencies involving the person they care for. Right to Emergency Leave This can include time off for unforeseen situations such as sudden illness, breakdown of regular care arrangements, or a crisis involving the person needing care. Protection Against Discrimination Under the Equality Act 2010, carers are protected from discrimination based on their association with a disabled person. Employers, public bodies, and service providers must not treat carers less favourably because of their caring responsibilities.
