Procurement specialist versus procurement head. As a head of procurement/supply chain for many years now I’m rather bemused to find that a high number of procurement interim opportunities focus on the need to specialise in only one spend area/category/process discipline versus someone (like me) who has seen and done it all (and can offer the fuller perspective, skillset and value for money). So no, I haven’t got ‘specialist’ IT knowledge! No, I haven’t got ‘specialist’ risk management experience! No, I haven’t had ‘specialist’ HR success! Instead, I’ve done ALL these things during my career and have now managed/mentored/developed/coached team members who ‘specialise’ (and I’ve navigated the related demands and challenges from C suite stakeholders that go with it). But it appears that being a current specialist in one subject is now more preferable than being experienced across all aspects. Who knew??

Seconding this, as a procurement professional from an engineering background, I found it interesting and even joyful to handle IT infrastructure projects, Saas implementation solutions and subscription based agreement not to mention designing SLA matrices. Also, HR success is another story with different taste, however, in each category a real professional should alert to business user differences and cultures cause that is the defining line for the strategy towards successful procurement championing.

Thinking about joining procurement? Here's why I did and why you should too ⬇ Here’s what makes procurement so exciting for me: 🔹 Daily Problem Solving: Every day presents new challenges—urgent needs, fires to put out, and problems to solve. 🔹 Relationship Building: Internal and external relationships are key. They boost your effectiveness and open doors. Procurement forces you to learn to manage them effectively. 🔹 Continuous Learning: You get to stay on top of evolving tech, market conditions, and global trends. 🔹 Hone Negotiating Skills: You get to use and improve your negotiating skills daily—essential both in and out of the workplace. 🔹 Global Interaction: Opportunity to deal with international suppliers and gain a global business perspective. 🔹 Make a Visible Impact: From launching new products to negotiating cost reductions, you can see and track your impact on the business. Procurement is a field where you can use your creativity, build valuable relationships, and make a tangible impact. If you’re ready for a dynamic career with endless opportunities, this is the place for you! And why did you join procurement? Put it in the comments ⬇
