Navigating holiday parenting time can be particularly complex following a separation. Whether it is Christmas, Thanksgiving, Spring Break, or Summer Vacation, Alberta Courts focus on the best interests of the children when determining holiday schedules. While equal time is often found to serve the children’s best interests, this is not always the case. Each family’s circumstances are unique, and the Courts will assess each situation accordingly. At Hayher Lee LLP, we understand the challenges that arise during the holidays and are here to help. Want to learn more? The holiday season brings joy to many, but it can also introduce stress, especially for families navigating co-parenting. As a paralegal at a family law firm, it's critical that we prioritize clear, timely communication with our clients regarding parenting time schedules during this busy time of year. Many clients may be facing changes in their usual routines, travel plans, or special events, all of which could impact the agreed-upon parenting time arrangements. Early discussions can help set realistic expectations, minimize conflict, and provide families with the clarity they need to ensure a smoother holiday season for both parents and children. A few key things to keep in mind: Review the existing parenting plan and be proactive about any adjustments or special requests. Encourage clients to confirm schedules in writing, especially for any temporary changes. Be sure to check in with clients regularly as the holidays draw nearer to address any last-minute issues, especially prevent having to litigate any issues in court. Remind clients to prioritize flexibility and understanding—sometimes the best interest of the child requires a little extra patience and empathy. Ultimately, our role is to facilitate a fair and positive co-parenting dynamic, ensuring that children have the opportunity to enjoy quality time with both parents, no matter what the season brings. Let's help our clients start the holidays off on the right foot. #FamilyLaw #CoParenting #ParentingTime #ClientCommunication #HolidayStress #FamilyLawyer #LegalProfessionals #Paralegal
