Happy to share my latest publication in African Conflict and Peacebuilding Review. In this paper, we make an empirical and analytical contribution to the literature on the escalation of farmer-herder conflicts using an explicit framework to describe and discuss why and how farmer-herder conflict escalates in Ghana. It presents a more complex form of conflict escalation, which is not only a question of violence but also how it manifests in nonviolent forms, depending on the form and intensity of the actions employed. https://lnkd.in/efbvUJXk

I read 'Humility on the Journey of State-Rebuilding in Somalia' by Zubair Bhatti, Gaël Rablland, and Nimo Jirdeh over the weekend. This paper offers insights into state-building. The stakes couldn't be higher: Nearly 2 billion people live in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States (FCS), representing over half of the world's poor. After witnessing Afghanistan's 2021 collapse despite two decades of international support, we must ask: What are we missing in our approach to state-building? The paper presents a fascinating critique of traditional state-building approaches, contrasting two key frameworks: -The Weberian institutional approach focusing on building administrative capacity - The social contract approach emphasises the complex relationships between governance, service delivery, and legitimacy What particularly resonated with me was the authors' challenge to common assumptions. For example, the assumption that enhanced service delivery would help the government improve its legitimacy with the people ( and draw support away from the armed opposition) may not be linear if the government is seen as supported by foreigners. This work offers lessons for international development practitioners and policymakers working in fragile contexts. It reminds us that state-building isn't just about technical solutions but understanding the intricate web of local political and social dynamics. Please have a read here:

My 5 questions approach suggests that a humanitarian manager needs to answer a few critical questions instead of filling endless forms and checklists in order to advance a specific crosscutting thematic area in the emergency operations. Let us take an example 👇
