I want to share a subject that has become very important to me, yet up until now I haven’t written about it. At first glance this may look like it is way off my usual focus of philanthropy and wealth management, and more specifically donor-advised funds. To me though, these concepts are all on a continuum.
We’ve all heard of the 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 (𝐒𝐃𝐆𝐬):

These 17 ambitious targets aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Yet, despite global efforts, progress has been spotty, and many are starting to question whether these external goals alone are enough. There are the usual excuses, but we don’t need more money; there is enough money. We don’t need better technology; we have the technology. In my view we lack the will to do it.
I firmly believe the answer lies in looking inward, and that brings me to the 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 (𝐈𝐃𝐆𝐬):

The IDGs are a complementary framework that focuses on the human element behind achieving the SDGs. They recognize that while external factors like technology, policy, and finance are crucial, so too is our internal capacity to create change.
The IDGs are based on the understanding that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are interconnected and influence how we interact with the world. By cultivating qualities such as empathy, wisdom, and collaboration, we can become more effective agents of change.
By addressing the human dimension of sustainable development, the IDGs provide a holistic approach to creating a better world. They provide a roadmap for personal and collective growth, equipping individuals, communities and societies with the inner resources needed to tackle global challenges.
The IDGs are a recognition that true sustainability begins within. By investing in our inner development—in other words by growing—we can unlock the potential to create a more just, equitable, and sustainable future.
