This week, I presented my poster Artificial Intelligence in U.S. Healthcare: The Current Regulatory Landscape and Future Recommendations at the HITLAB Innovators Summit 2024. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to engage with me — your feedback and insights were invaluable! The Summit was an enriching experience to connect with professionals, researchers, and innovators in the healthcare and tech spaces. Here are a few key takeaways that stood out: The Power of Collaboration: The future of healthcare innovation lies in cross-disciplinary partnerships. Many discussions emphasized the importance of collaboration between healthcare providers, tech companies, and investors to tackle complex healthcare challenges. Special shout-out to Catherine Skobe and J.R. Meloro for their patient and participant-centered education and inclusion initiatives at Pfizer. AI and Data Equity in Healthcare: AI presents a huge opportunity, especially in cities like New York, with its diverse patient population. The potential to improve clinical trials and reduce bias in healthcare decisions is enormous. As such, it is essential to prioritize ethical frameworks to avoid biases and inaccuracies in AI models. Human-Centered Innovation: While technology is driving innovation, human interaction remains irreplaceable in healthcare. Companies are realizing that while digital health tools like telehealth and apps are valuable, they still require human intervention to be effective. Alternative Funding Models: Highlighted by Ben Kromnick, venture capital continues to be a primary funding source, but the rise of venture debt, crowdfunding, and private equity provides more options. Notably, many health systems are creating in-house venture funds to stay ahead of the innovation curve. Healthcare Equity and Physician-Led Innovation: Companies like Health2047 are emphasizing the need for physician-led innovation and prioritizing healthcare equity. This summit reinforced the importance of integrating these values into product development to create solutions that reflect the needs of diverse populations. New York’s Growing Role as a Health Tech Hub: With major investments in AI, translational R&D, and workforce development, New York is positioning itself as a global leader in healthcare innovation. Programs like Start-Up New York and investments from LifeSci NYC are helping health tech companies thrive by offering incentives and supportive ecosystems for growth. I’m ready to take these insights into the next stage of my work and look forward to staying connected with the incredible change-makers I met during the summit. Yesterday marked Day 1 of HealthTech For Care’s Health Tech Innovation Days (#HTID6), offering Pulse Edge a chance to connect with global thought leaders in #healthtech. Some striking insights: 📌 #France, a 'territory of #innovation', boasts over 2600 health tech companies, generating $1.4 billion in 2022. 📌 France has attracted the most foreign investment in Europe since 2019. 📌 60% of French development is in biomedicines, the second-largest pipeline globally. 📌 #Financing remains a challenge: less ambitious projects (lower risk/reward), 'more mature' financing (increased funding per raise, but among fewer raises) and challenging valuations and deals. 📌 Biotech financing shows positive signs: 20% increase in S&P Biotech ETF since April, and increased M&As in 2024. Further improvements are likely next year given macro-economic trends and impact from policy tools. 📌 #Opportunities for value-creating technologies include (1) increased risk-taking and (2) providing more equity to long-term investors (“𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘢 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭") Biotech company advice from industry leader Marc de Garidel: 🚀 'Focus and speed' are critical. Focus on one drug then expand to other indications. Be resilient but know when to stop. 🚀 Differentiation vs. standard of care is key. Start your strategic trial design in Phase 2 and map a path to both registration and market access. 🚀 Work with top tier investors (despite the challenge). 🚀 Ensure the right board: complementary skills and challenge. 🚀 Focus on the US market (and hire accordingly). 🚀 Have an exit strategy. Future perspectives for health tech innovation from Gabriela Apiou-Sbirlea, Robert Tepper and timothy ferris: 💡 New technologies have exploded in the last 20 years. 💡 Innovation now emerges from a variety of sources (pharma, small biotech and academic centers), requiring collaboration. Opportunities exist to 'cross-train' in discovery and development as well as leverage experience from biopharma leaders. 💡 'Health info technologies' can lower costs on delivery side, aiding affordability for new innovation. However, due to digitization burden, such technologies have slowed delivery of care. This is expected to reverse rapidly going forward. 💡 AI will impact clinical decision-making via discrete efficiencies (where AI performs better) and via decision support. Expect a transition period. 💡Expect also new ways to deliver care, such as digital therapeutics in mental health. I'm greatly looking forward to Day 2! In "LEADERS of the Month" for September, we feature 3 healthcare thought leaders from large healthcare systems talking about how innovation are fostered in large organizations in a highly regulated and complex industry, healthcare innovation trends and their advice to startups who are disrupting the industry. Chris Coburn, Chief Innovation Officer at Mass General Brigham, discusses how the organization advances discoveries from Harvard faculty and transitions them into the marketplace. Currently, only 6% of their over 7,000 faculty members are involved in projects with the potential for true commercial outcomes. Mass General Brigham Innovation has launched various initiatives to address this gap, including a $500 million venture fund; “First Look”—rapid-fire presentations showcasing the latest research from leading Mass General Brigham scientists; “Un-Met Clinical Needs”- 100+ key opinion leaders in healthcare weighing in on the top un-met clinical needs in medicine today; Emerging Tech Zone – Hands-on exploration of some of the latest digital and AI-based healthcare technologies, all aimed at translating research into adoption and commercial outcomes. Dr. Fritz Francois serves as Executive Vice President and Vice Dean, Chief of Hospital Operations at NYU Langone Health. He oversees all patient care activities on the Manhattan campus, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety. Dr. François discusses NYU Langone's approach to innovation, which leverages data to enhance quality, safety, workforce efficiency, and patient satisfaction while achieving financial goals. He encourages startups to aim for a "moonshot" in their endeavors. Dr. Christopher Longhurst, chief clinical and innovation officer at UC San Diego Health, discusses the impact of AI on healthcare. While he thinks there is overpromising results for the next 3 to 5 years, emphasizing the importance of rigorously evaluating tools and innovations to ensure it works, Dr. Longhurst is very optimistic about AI's long-term impact on healthcare. He envisions that in 7 to 10 years, a wide array of advancements will significantly improve the experiences in both delivering and receiving care. He advises startups to focus on People, Process and Technology. Startups' problem solutions need to align with workflow and generate value for the system.
