On September 10, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published its report entitled “Patent Landscape Report on Agrifood”, which outlines a panorama of patents linked to the agrifood sector. The document aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the latest patent trends in the agrifood field, including patents related to innovation and technological advances in five case study areas across the sector. Thus, among the topics covered, the report highlights: soil and fertilizer management; pest and disease management without pesticides; alternative sources of nutrients for human food; predictive models in precision agriculture and autonomous devices in precision agriculture. Our annual Science Symposium this year featured a panel discussion on how to improve the outlook for UK oilseed rape (OSR) production. 🚜 Reflecting on the knock-on impact of the loss of neonicotinoids for controlling cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB), United Oilseeds Marketing Limited Managing Director, James Warner, emphasised the need for cross-industry collaboration. “Now is a critical time for OSR production in the UK. The cropping area has dropped to just a quarter of what it was ten years ago,” he said. “We have to move the conversation forward – it doesn’t look like neonicotinoids will be coming back. It’s essential to have an industry-wide push on reinvigorating this iconic crop, and Fera’s Enigma V project will play an important part in finding a solution for growers.” 🔬 Our Enigma V research unites partners such as United Oilseeds to improve CSFB control with combined biopesticides.
