THE ROLE OF THE MANAGER IN FOSTERING A CULTURE OF EMPLOYEE WELLBEING By promoting mental wellbeing in the workplace, we are creating psychologically safe workplaces, where individuals and systems are managed in ways that guarantee sustained productivity and performance. Building a culture of organizational wellbeing, need not be a cumbersome process. Here are five easy steps for managers to begin with in your organization. The 5 Rs for managers in fostering a wellbeing culture: 1. Reach out and have conversations: A good place to begin is to institute a culture of kindness by initiating wellbeing conversations. Ask your people the basic questions: “how are you today? “how are things going? Don’t we ask these questions at home? Why do managers believe that they must switch off empathy and kindness once they enter the work environment? 2. Recognize signs of stress: Recognise the signs of stress in both individuals and your teams. For individuals, look out for mood swings, sudden withdrawal, increased or exaggerated or abnormal emotional reactions (laughing, crying), itchiness or nervousness, more time off work or they start to come in late. For teams: you may notice more complaints and arguments amongst team members, sickness absences, impact on productivity and performance, higher staff turnover, breakdown of relationships or bullying. 3. Respond to what you have recognized: If you observe that someone is experiencing stress or other mental health issues like burnout or anxiety, encourage them to talk to someone or do something about it. Do not ignore what you have observed. 4. Reflect on the actions taken: Monitor and review the actions you have taken. Consider how effective they are and if not, try something else. Look at your data and metrics: 5. Routine: Make it a routine of asking these questions. It makes talking about how people feel normal. And before long a culture is built around that. #wellbeingatwork #employeewellbeingprograms #organizationalwellbeing #workplacementalhealth #Highperformingteams #peakperformance #corporatetraining #resilience

While R U OK? Day has passed, the conversation around mental well-being shouldn't stop. Workplaces can often become overwhelming, with day-to-day demands overshadowing the importance of genuine check-ins. R U OK? Day serves as a reminder to pause and connect with colleagues on a deeper level by asking, "Are you OK?" However, fostering a caring workplace culture means this question shouldn't be reserved for a single day. At Great Place to Work®, we’ve observed how a supportive culture can lead to stronger relationships, trust, and better mental health outcomes. Australia's Best Workplaces™ demonstrate the power of such environments, where 96% of employees feel genuinely cared for. Leaders play a pivotal role in creating this atmosphere by normalising regular check-ins, offering mental health resources, and promoting openness about struggles. Psychologically healthy workplaces aren’t just beneficial for employee well-being but drive better business outcomes through higher engagement and motivation. Let’s continue the R U OK? conversation beyond a single day. By fostering environments where employees feel safe to share, workplaces can become more supportive and resilient, making every day an opportunity to ask the simple, yet meaningful question: "Are you OK?" #RUOK #MentalHealthMatters #WorkplaceWellbeing #EmployeeEngagement #PsychologicallySafe #SupportiveLeadership #MentalHealthAwareness #GreatPlaceToWork #CultureOfCare #greatplacetowork #gptw4all https://lnkd.in/g2teDqQ7

Workplace syndrome is a growing concern characterized by burnout, cynicism, and diminished effectiveness. While exhaustion and reduced efficacy are well-known, cynicism, fuelled by workplace factors, is often overlooked. This negative outlook can erode motivation, hinder growth perception, and lead to turnover. To combat cynicism, prioritizing personal wellbeing, preventing its spread, fostering empathy, and practising positivity are essential strategies. By implementing these measures, organizations can create a more positive and productive work environment. #WorkplaceSyndrome #Employeewellbeing https://lnkd.in/ehajU3Pz

too true. very few companies actually act upon the values of 'r u ok' day. I have being in organisation where even today they post about the day whilst they terminate their employee right after parental leave or annual leave. there are also great team and organisation out there who doesn't post anything and yet they have the same values. a good indication is always look at each organisation who actually shows how and why they make these posts vs post just for views and feel good stories.
Happiness Researcher, Speaker, Coach & Consultant. I coach leaders to master the skills of happiness. I also help organisations elevate their employee experience (EX), upskill their teams, and become employers of choice.
If your workplace: - Has a toxic workplace culture - Let’s terrible leaders get away with poor behaviour because they’re “a high performer” - Is known to treat their staff pretty darn poorly It’s best that you don’t post the tokenistic photos and slogans on R U OK day. People will roll their eyes, and your team will see right through it. Instead, use this as an opportunity to re-evaluate and redevelop your approach to employee experience, staff wellbeing, and workplace happiness. When it’s been shown that your direct manager has a larger impact on your mental health and wellbeing than your doctor - we can’t have conversations about being OK without also having conversations about creating healthier and happier workplaces. PS. Shoutout to all the amazing organisations and leaders who commit to fostering healthy working environments all year round. You’re the real MVPs 👏 #ruok #ruokday #workplaceculture #workplacewellbeing #workplacewellness #employeeexperience #mentalhealthatwork
