On May 22nd, the 'International Dialogue on Ovarian Cancer, from Bench to Bedside' congress brought together experts from the Sbarro Health Research Organization, Temple University College of Science and Technology and the Università degli Studi di Messina in a groundbreaking event! This hybrid congress, organized by myself, and Professor Alfredo Ercoli , bridged the gap between molecular research and clinical practice, fostering collaboration to improve ovarian cancer outcomes. Researchers shared the latest advancements, while clinicians discussed current treatment protocols and emphasized the vital feedback loop between the lab and the clinic. Professor Vincenzo Carnevale’s insights on how AI is revolutionizing cancer research were particularly noteworthy. 🔬 Saturday Science Spotlight: Unveiling the Complexity of Ovarian Cancer 🩺Dr Elena Denisenko from the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research working with teams from St John of God Subiaco Hospital, Curtin University, Clinipath Pathology, The University of Western Australia and Edith Cowan University (among others) recently published a study in Nature Portfolio that uses cutting-edge technologies, such as the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre infrastructure, to shed light on this complexity in ovarian cancer. 🔍 What They Found: The team identified various "subclones" or groups of cancer cells within tumours, each behaving differently and interacting uniquely with their surrounding environment. Dr Adel will discuss his Cure Cancer-funded research, which is focused on investigating thousands of proteins in samples from mesothelioma patients who received immunotherapy, seeking a predictive protein signature using advanced computational techniques. When translated into clinical settings, this protein signature can help clinicians identify patients likely to benefit and prevent unnecessary side effects and time wasted on ineffective therapy for those who will not benefit. Let’s stop bile duct cancer in its tracks. PSC Support is funding cutting-edge research into bile duct cancer and its relationship with the immune system. Dr Jarman’s incredible research study could be the first steps towards a medicine to prevent bile duct cancer in PSC. This funding is part of our ambitious Mission 2030 campaign. By 2030, we will fund and support more PSC research than ever before, offering over £1 million in grants to researchers to: 🟠 fund PSC studies aligned with our Research Strategy, turning researchers’ ideas into reality; 🟢 fund 3 year PhD clinical fellowships in PSC to help develop the careers of future PSC specialists and to fill the critical gaps in our knowledge about PSC; and 🟣 support them to set up larger studies and clinical trials. and we can’t do it alone. This event promises to be an exciting look at the ongoing battle against cancer, highlighting the incredible research advancements being made in the field - right here in Nova Scotia. The highly personalized form of immunotherapy called CAR-T therapy that is happening in our own backyard is not just changing lives, but is redefining the future of cancer treatment. The fact that blood cancers, and one day solid tumours, can be treated with fewer side-effects than other therapies is a game-changer for cancer patients. Every breakthrough brings us one step closer to more effective treatments and, ultimately, cures. Diagnostic trajectories in #sarcoma and #rarecancerpatients-in-general are often complex with delays at different levels due to the unfamiliarity of people, (the later)patients, and doctors with the disease and the heterogeneity in histologies and clinical presentations. This may lead to late diagnoses and frustration at all levels and reduced HRQoL of patients. Olga Husson presented at #ESMOSarcomaRareCancers meeting in Lugano results of a study in the Netherlands on diagnostic trajectories of rare cancer patients and Emily Holthuis, PhD student of our team, presents a poster today with interesting results of symptoms reported by patients to their GP prior to their #sarcoma diagnosis. The discussant yesterday highlighted results of our QUEST study in which we compare diagnostic trajectory data between the UK and The Netherlands in #Sarcoma (Vicky Soomers). More results will follow the coming time. Grateful to the hard work of our research team #AYASARCOMA The Netherlands Cancer Institute Olga Husson. Hopefully this work will give us hints for the future in solving part of this difficult to crack multifactorial delay-in-diagnosis issue.

RVH welcomed 12 post-secondary students this summer to conduct applied health research exploring vital issues affecting healthcare, all aimed at improving patient outcomes. One of the students, Elsa Salathiel, recipient of the 2024 Laura E. Crook Scholarship, assessed RVH's unique skin cancer biopsy clinic. Elsa’s work will help researchers better understand whether RVH’s innovative regional skin cancer biopsy clinic has aided in detecting melanoma earlier among rural populations. If successful, this clinic model could be expanded across rural Ontario to improve access to specialized care and enhance outcomes for all patients, regardless of where they live! 🔬✨ Attending the big #AACR2024 #AACR24 meeting for the First Time! 🔬✨ --> 22.500 participants, an extraordinary number of company exhibitions and posters.... just crazy. After I think now close to 25 years in cancer research, it is interesting to finally be attending the "big" AACR Annual Meeting in San Diego! While the cancer research presented, especially during the plenary sessions, is spectacular, maybe I’m now busy trying to understand the depth of AACR itself, as an observer. Because, undoubtedly, AACR has become such an important multi-dimensional organization, a national but now also international powerhouse (journals, contacts with NIH NCI, patient advocacy and much more). How does AACR really work? And yes, it is a lot “politics” but it is for some reason in this aspect important to understand the why, how, when, and where. As well as the huge landscape in the intersection of academic cancer research and small and big pharma/biotech cancer research and development.
