“We recognise the linkages between economic prosperity and improving health and well-being and indeed each can help and support the other,” Minister Mike Nesbitt speaking at our Healthtech Leaders forum at Stormont this week. The leaders forum along with partners and stakeholders highlighted the need for a Chief Innovation Lead within the NI health service - to ensure products developed in NI are used in NI to support solutions for our health and economy challenges - as Minister Nesbitt said to “shop local”. The need for a NI specific life sciences regulatory advocate was also highlighted to ensure NI was a great landing region for foreign direct investment and to support our indigenous companies. Economy Minister Conor Murphy also spoke about life sciences as a priority sector for the Department for the Economy NI. Minister Murphy launched the Matrix, The Northern Ireland Science Industry Panel life sciences report earlier this year at the HIRANI Health Tech Spring conference and has been a strong advocate for the sector.

Last month, I gave a keynote for the Annual Conference of Health Innovation West of England (full 26 minute video below). I presented my ‘train tracks’ thesis in public for the very first time i.e. my argument that we should enable standardised infrastructure that enables health innovators to deploy their solutions repeatedly. The thesis was first published in a long essay on Peerr earlier in the summer - https://lnkd.in/ev8VHmHr I argue that we need platforms for point solutions, rather than trying to cope with lots of point solutions or compromising with generic platforms. I also argue that the innovation ecosystem is the wrong unit of analysis here (although I truly believe in the power of ecosystems); it’s the innovation journey that deserves our attention, and which requires alignment. It’s probably not a comfortable presentation to listen to for those involved in innovation, but I tried to be kind while remaining direct. N.B. The other keynotes that day by Jordan Cummins and Verena Stocker were truly exceptional, with gratitude for the invitation, and immense credit to the organisers for a wonderful day, especially Vanesther Hamer. https://lnkd.in/eh2t_vMj

I recently read something that resonated with me, as a big fan of Hevolution. Here are my thoughts: Significant funding goes into research, so why not also invest in collective implementation? I believe raising this question is essential; now let’s work together to implement the answers. Health systems face several barriers in moving beyond a focus on sick care. Integrating preventive Care into primary Care is important. Educating and empowering Patients, increasing public awareness about preventive practices and empowering individuals to engage in healthier lifestyles can reduce the burden on healthcare systems. Collaborative Innovation - Encouraging partnerships across healthcare sectors to develop scalable preventive solutions. By prioritizing prevention, health systems can foster longer, healthier lives, reduce costs, and boost productivity. And: Let’s focus on international cooperation instead of seeking for recognition of ourselves. 😇😎
