The more propulsion swimmers can create, the faster they go. More is always better, and all opportunities need to be taken advantage of. Helping swimmers go faster is about helping them remove losses of propulsion through the stroke. If they can eliminate mistakes, they can increase their speed. They have to set up the stroke well, hold those positions, and accelerate throughout the pull. What’s one of the most common areas where swimmers make mistakes? The breath. The opposite arm tends to be less effective during the breath. When breathing to the right, the left arm doesn’t get the job done. The breath is slow, and the arm keeps moving, putting it out of position to pull effectively. The breath is unstable, and the arm has to create stability, putting it out of position to pull effectively. It’s pretty easy to see but telling swimmers to fix it doesn’t work. They can’t feel it, and the arm seems to have a mind of its own. That’s because the ROOT cause is not being addressed. The breath needs to be improved. With better feedback we get better learning. Paddle cap freestyle can help get the head stable and the breath tight. By swimming one arm freestyle breathing AWAY from the pulling arm (UNCO), we can make it painfully obvious what happens during slow breathing and make it painfully obvious what happens with a rushed pull. And by closing the fists, everything is a lot more obvious. They can’t create stability, and they can’t fake the pull. To continue to help swimmers learn, add pressure. Add performance expectations (speed, stroke count, stroke rate, fatigue) Use training aids (resistance, buoy, fins, etc.) Use different hand postures (pinch paddles, upside down paddles, horns, etc.) Combine paddle cap freestyle and UNCO. In these sets, we put these ideas into practice. In both cases, swimmers are tasked with working through the different technical challenges and asked to perform at higher levels, all while executing great breathing. I grew up swimming and playing water polo. As a lifelong swimmer who recently got back in the pool, here's why it's worth taking up the habit, even if you only know how to doggie paddle. ## Because It's Good for You If you aren't spending some meaningful chunk of time every week pushing your body, you're going to regret it. Regular exercise is universally agreed to be good for not just your physical health, but also your mental and emotional well-being. Few forms of exercise offer such effective muscular and cardiovascular training as swimming. Add to that the complete lack of impact -- you're floating after all -- and the health benefits are unparalleled. ## To Face Your Fears Over seventy percent of the Earth's surface is covered in it. And yet, people young and old are terrified of water. Joining a swim program is not just a great way to invest in your health. It's also an opportunity to develop greater comfort in and around the water. Where else can you make regular improvement in your general fitness while also improving your survival skills? ## Because It's a Team Sport and an Individual One Distance, duration, speed, and stroke. These are the pieces in play in the pool. Most other sports involve a number of participants performing a variety of roles. With swimming however, you're both competing with and supporting teammates. Everyone is measured by same yardstick: what was your time for a given event? The comradery competition that builds up amongst swimmers is infectious in the best possible way. ## To Find a Source of Solitude and Connection With wireless earbuds and smart glasses permeating everyday life, it can be challenging to create opportunities for your mind to be still. While there are pool-compatible electronics today, they're not nearly as commonplace as they are in dry-land sport. The pool is one of the last places you can escape the ever-growing queues of content. When you're in the workout, it's just you and your thoughts. And when you aren't in the water, you're unlikely to find yourself immersed amongst massive headphones or selfie cameras. You make small talk. You get to know people. You build friendships. The legs create speed, and the kick needs to be effective for that to happen. Swimmers need to be able to hold water with the feet. And swimmers need to be able to generate speed and maintain body position. The legs need to be fit. Swimmers have to create high forces with their legs and sustain high forces throughout their races. Improving the skill of the kick isn’t easy. With flutter and dolphin kick, the kick happens fast. And because the feet are small compared to the hands, there’s not much pressure into the water, and it’s hard for swimmers to feel what they’re doing. Great kicking skills are nuanced and hard to feel. With the breaststroke kick, higher forces are required, and strength needs to be developed to create those forces. Resisted kicking a powerful way to solve both problems. And tombstone kick is a simple solution that anyone can use to get the job done. Just have swimmers keep the kickboard vertical and blast the legs. It’s a very effective resistance option that is safe, free, and doesn’t require extra storage space. Swimmers can develop more skill as they can feel the pressure on the feet. And you’ll get more strength as swimmers must overcome the resistance to move forward. To make it even more effective, you can challenge swimmers with tempo trainers and kick rates for dolphin and breaststroke kick. You can add fatigue with longer distances and shorter rest periods. It’s also very effective to go from tombstone kick to regular to kick to swim to help swimmers learn to use the legs while swimming. These sets demonstrate two different ways to implement tombstone kicking. The first is focused on helping breaststrokers learn to get as much out of their kick as possible and build that skill into their stroke. The second is focused on helping freestylers learn to hold water with the legs, and then use the legs to power fast swimming even with tired legs. Butterfly timing can be difficult to improve, especially when swimmers are struggling with full stroke. And by sticking with full stroke butterfly, there’s going to be a lot less volume, which means swimmers are going to get fewer opportunities to improve their skill and their fitness. Let’s do something different. I like one arm butterfly because it retains the essential rhythm of butterfly, but it’s much easier to perform. That means swimmers can get more practice and they can work it in an aerobic context. To improve both skill and fitness, the trick is to ask for speed and effort during the drill. Here, they’ll be descending and building so that they can feel the timing at different speeds, and to challenge their fitness. And throughout the set, they’ll get plenty of opportunities to put their skills to the test during full stroke butterfly. We’ll even throw in some head up work to put extra pressure on the second kick. While full stroke swimming is often the way to go, by using one arm instead of two, we can accelerate skill development and fitness development to help swimmers accomplish their goals faster.

🥇 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬 In 1934, American gymnast George Nissen invented trampolining after being inspired by trapeze acrobats performing tricks off safety nets. Nissen's initial prototype was used to train astronauts and athletes. Since then, trampolining has gained widespread popularity, with over 1,500 trampoline parks worldwide. The ASTM F2970-22 standard provides guidelines for the design, manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance, inspection, and modification of commercial or institutional trampoline courts, primarily for amusement, entertainment, or recreation. This standard applies to various facilities, including trampoline parks, amusement parks, gyms, and municipal parks, but excludes consumer and professional exhibition trampolines, aquatic trampolines, and single-user trampolines under direct supervision. Trampolining became an Olympic sport at the 2000 Sydney Games, featuring men's and women's individual competitions. Olympic trampolining involves athletes performing acrobatics on a rectangular trampoline, with routines composed of ten elements judged on difficulty, execution, and air time. Athletes can reach heights over 8 meters (26 feet) and must demonstrate precise technique. Internationally, trampoline gymnastics also includes synchronized trampoline, double mini, and tumbling categories. Recreational trampolines differ significantly from Olympic trampolines. Recreational trampolines have non-porous beds with less elasticity, resulting in lower jumps and reduced injury risk. In contrast, Olympic trampolines feature more elastic, porous beds that allow higher jumps and require spotters for safety.
