Three quarters of pregnancy related deaths occur from 1 day to 1 year postpartum, often due to complications that require urgent care. The Clara Busse, PhD, MPH et al., study explored how birthing parents in the southeastern U.S. use acute care in the months after birth, revealing key insights: 🔍 Postpartum health concerns require timely medical care, yet many birthing parents describe fear and uncertainty about their postpartum health. 🔍 Parents often face difficult choices about when and where to seek postpartum acute care. 🔍 Healthcare systems can improve postpartum care by better preparing individuals for the postpartum period and structuring services to meet the needs of birthing parents. To learn more about how to support birthing parents postpartum, you can view the study here: https://lnkd.in/g8Ep_pzP #postpartum #acutecare #birth #uncgillings #publichealth #maternalandchildhealth

Patient education is one of the most critical aspects of healthcare Yet, we continue to fall short in ways that are truly perplexing. How can we expect patients to learn, absorb, and collaborate with their care teams when they are overwhelmed, scared, or in pain? It's unrealistic to think that someone processing a life-changing diagnosis or recovering from surgery can immediately understand complex medical information, especially when we don’t take the time to make it clear and accessible. As a parent of a dyslexic child, I see the challenges of learning every day. My child is in the "read to learn" phase, and it's been a struggle. But I know that educational best practices exist. Teachers are trained to use methods like teach-back, multisensory learning, and other techniques to maximize student engagement and understanding. They know that different learners need different approaches. So why do we, in healthcare, neglect these principles when it comes to patient education? Especially in high-stakes situations like discharge planning or outpatient care, where understanding can literally be a matter of life and death? Instead, we often blame the patient when they don’t follow their care plan, labeling them as "non-adherent" or "non-compliant." It’s time to shift our perspective. Just as we work to support students who learn differently, we must apply those same principles to healthcare. We need to meet patients where they are, using teach-back methods, visual aids, and plain language to ensure they truly understand their care. Only then can we build a system where patients feel supported, informed, and empowered to take charge of their health.
