Reflecting on the True Cost of Unhealthy Urban Environments: Insights from Healthy City Design 2024 🌍 Celia García Albertos and Ruth Gow McLenachan presented at the Healthy City Design 2024 Conference in Liverpool, sharing lessons and insights on how addressing urban health challenges can generate significant economic savings. During the workshop, they introduced the Healthy Cities Generator (€VALUE) tool, developed with EIT Urban Mobility and the University of Lisbon. This digital tool offers a comprehensive economic impact analysis, helping cities evaluate the cost-effectiveness of implementing healthy urban planning changes. Ruth and Celia were able to present a case study of the tool in action, with work done at the city of Bradfod, UK, with Dr Saira Ali, Team Leader for Landscape, Design and Conservation at Bradford Council, also contributing. The hands-on session allowed participants to experience how the tool can assess the financial benefits of health-promoting infrastructure—critical for both public health and urban development. A big thank you to everyone who participated and engaged in meaningful discussions on shaping healthier, more sustainable cities. Want to learn more about the new tool? As someone deeply invested in urban development, I've come to appreciate the power of language in shaping our perceptions and approaches. When we talk about revitalizing our cities, the terms "urban renewal" and "urban regeneration" often come up. However, I find that the distinction between the two is crucial, and it speaks volumes about our mindset towards progress. Urban renewal, as commonly understood, focuses on improving specific areas of a city by replacing old structures with new ones. While this may seem like a step forward, it often falls short of true innovation. It feels more like a cycle of old practices presented as new opportunities, leaving us wondering why, after 40 plus years of renewal efforts, nothing seems truly new. On the other hand, urban regeneration holds a different promise. It speaks to a process that goes beyond mere renovation; it embodies a spirit of growth and evolution from generation to generation. Regeneration suggests a holistic approach that embraces innovation, sustainability, and community engagement. It's about breathing new life into urban spaces while honoring their history and cultural significance. Language matters because it shapes our perception of reality. By embracing the term "regeneration," we shift our focus towards long-term sustainability and resilience. We recognize the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental factors in urban development. So, as we navigate the complexities of urban planning, let's challenge ourselves to think beyond renewal. Let's prioritize regeneration, not just in words but in actions. Let's create cities that are not just rebuilt but reinvented, where innovation thrives, and every generation finds inspiration for growth. What are your thoughts on this distinction between renewal and regeneration? How can we redefine our approach to urban development for a truly sustainable future? Let's start a conversation. #UrbanRegeneration #SustainableCities #InnovationInUrbanPlanning https://lnkd.in/g9uxYwXa

🔄 Building Resilience in Urban Systems through Inclusive Market Approaches During the Vikāra Institute Market Systems Symposium 2024, GOAL highlighted the critical role of a market systems approach in empowering urban communities, with insights from Bernard McCaul, GOAL's President of Program Design, Innovation, and Business Development. Bernard shared GOAL’s perspective on building resilient, inclusive urban environments, pointing out that informal settlements often lack access to resources and infrastructure. "Resilient urban spaces need inclusive market systems that empower communities to grow sustainably," Bernard remarked, introducing the unique approach GOAL takes with its RINA Guidance Manual. GOAL’s Resilient, Inclusive Neighborhoods Approach (RINA) emphasises practical, scalable solutions to build resilience in fragile urban settings. By focusing on market inclusivity, social cohesion, and local partnerships, RINA helps transform vulnerable communities into active, resilient participants in urban life. During the panel, Bernard stressed the importance of social cohesion and community-centred resilience strategies: “Urban resilience relies on community connections and support networks; these are as crucial as formal markets for sustainable development.” GOAL’s holistic RINA approach integrates social, economic, and environmental factors to strengthen informal settlements, making cities more inclusive and resilient. As cities grow, the RINA framework provides a model for aligning local governments, businesses, and communities. How can insights from the past help us plan the cities of the future? Today, we're at the Oslo Urban Week 2024 kickoff event, set in the city’s beautiful historic centre, Kvadraturen. As we look toward the future of urban development, it’s clear that we need to rethink how we plan our cities—not just for the well-being of people, but for the health of our shared planet. Sometimes, looking to the past offers fresh perspectives, allowing forgotten ideas to re-emerge in a new light. This year’s theme, “Back to the Future,” highlights how insights from the past can help shape tomorrow’s cities. The photo below is from the panel discussion moderated by Rasmus Reinvang, CEO at OMA and Maren Bjerkeng, Head of Architecture and Urban Development at Aspelin Ramm. An interesting discussion between architects Alison Brooks and Peter Butenschøn and climate activist Andreas Magnusson that explores how to balance modern urban development, cultural heritage, sustainable growth and densification, and the importance of community involvement. We'll be in Oslo throughout Oslo Urban Week, participating in various events and gaining knowledge across professions. If you're also in town, we'd love to connect—don’t hesitate to reach out! #shl #schmidthammerlassen #oslourbanweek #oslourbanweek2024 #urbandevelopment #urbanplanning #urbanism #shapingthecitiesoftomorrow
