The attached #NYT article is not only a story about drugs but also the impact of financial distress and how it is killing us. "It's not coincidental that the exponential rise in overdose deaths has occurred in tandem with a profound increase in income inequality." I know when I was in millions of dollars of debt with small kids, too much wine and sugar were my favorite go-to's to find relief. It worsened the problems, but I had no one to talk to. Can you relate? In a culture that reveres money and success, I felt ashamed. "Most addiction results from attempts to self-medicate #isolation, social disconnection, psychiatric disorders, #trauma, and severe economic distress." "Addicts" are not the only people who try to escape pain through unhealthy means. Have you ever tried to escape economic distress? If so how? Regardless of your bank account, the first step in financial health is to be honest with at least one person about your economic facts and money feelings. I found great relief when I was finally able to say, "I hate that I lost all my money, had to move, lost my home, etc. I am afraid that having lost everything, I am unloveable, a failure, and a bad mom as a result." I am not alone. Many of us are dying to escape financial fear. However, it does not have to be this way if we can break down the taboos around money and be honest about what is going on. You may know someone who struggles with money. Reach out and ask if they want to talk. You do not have to fix their problems; just listen. Being heard and listening to others restores our humanity and connection to what matters—love, kindness, and care. What do you think of the connection between growing inequality and a rise of overdoses? How have you managed financial stress? #addiction #inequality #mentalhealth #financialwellness #finance #money #debt #psychology #fentanyl #overdose #death. #divorce #loss #incomeinequality
