Eureka Shipping to Launch Eco-Friendly Cement Carrier in the Great Lakes
Eureka Shipping, a collaboration between SMT Shipping and The CSL Group, has unveiled plans to construct a groundbreaking mechanical/pneumatic cement ship aimed at curbing emissions within Great Lakes shipping.
With a deadweight of 12,500 metric tonnes, the innovative vessel is poised to replace two older counterparts, aligning with Eureka's commitment to eco-friendly practices. According to Kai Grotterud, Managing Director of Eureka Shipping, the new cement carrier will play a pivotal role in decarbonization efforts, substantially reducing emissions per metric tonne of cargo transported.
The vessel's design incorporates a diesel-electric propulsion system, fuel-efficient engines capable of operating on HVO biofuel, and two rudder propellers equipped with 360-degree thrust for enhanced maneuverability. Additionally, energy-saving features such as LED lighting and advanced cargo handling equipment are integrated, alongside noise insulation and silencers to minimize operational noise. Moreover, the vessel is primed for shore power usage once available.
Currently under construction by the Holland Shipyard Group in the Netherlands, the vessel is slated for delivery in 2025. In the interim, the MV Sunnanvik, an 8,600 DWT mechanical/pneumatic cement carrier, will cover trade routes until the new vessel's arrival. Notably, the MV Sunnanvik has been equipped with two "Ventofoil" sails from Econowind, marking a significant leap towards green energy adoption. These # sails harness # wind energies to provide additional thrust, thereby reducing #emissions. Their effectiveness will be evaluated on the Great Lakes to optimize vessel #speed based on prevailing wind conditions.
Eureka underscores that the Sunnanvik will mark the pioneering entry of a sail-equipped #vessel into Great Lakes operations, reaffirming their commitment to sustainable #shipping practices.
Great effort from the team! Let's keep going until the finish line!
