Germany 🇩🇪 goes two for two in Group A of UEFA EURO 2024, becoming the first team to officially confirm a spot in the knockout stage - they defeat Hungary 🇭🇺 by a score of two goals to none in their second group match in Stuttgart. Jamal Musiala scored the opening goal twenty-two minutes in, receiving a pass from İlkay Gündoğan after the latter took advantage of a Hungarian defensive mishap. Gündoğan would score the second goal 45 minutes later, finishing off a beautiful passing progression with an immediate shot into the bottom-right corner. If Switzerland defeats Scotland later this evening, it means that Germany and Switzerland will play on Sunday, 21.00 (CEST) in Frankfurt with the winning side taking top spot in Group A; Switzerland would also confirm a first or second place finish in the group, a direct spot into the round of sixteen. It is another draw at UEFA EURO 2024, the second in one day, as England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Denmark 🇩🇰 finish their match in a one to one draw, the exact same score as it was after 90 minutes in their UEFA EURO 2020 semifinal. Harry Kane scored in that semifinal match, and he would score against the Danes at a European Championship again - this one on seventeen minutes through an excellent pass from Kyle Walker, that bounced off Andreas Christensen's legs before landing straight to the Bayern München forward. Morten Hjulmand then scored what is surely one of the best goals of the tournament with a blast from long range that went off the left post and in; Denmark played very well, outshooting England 16-12, 7-4 on target with 51 % possession, but they could not find a winning shot and neither could their opposition as the two gain one point each from this result. That said, Denmark are now competing with Slovenia and Serbia for the second direct spot in the round of sixteen, as England may have done enough to qualify for the knockouts with four points; the Danes were in a similar situation in 2021 at the last European Championship, finishing above Finland and Russia by defeating the Russians 4-1 in Copenhagen while Finland struggled against the Belgians, one of the best teams in Europe, in an 0-2 defeat. They finish above France 🇫🇷 and the Netherlands 🇳🇱 on the final day of the group, but they also gained a massive amount of help from Poland 🇵🇱, who, despite already being eliminated prior to this match, showed that they had the courage to play for a crucial result in Dortmund, drawing 1-1 on a pair of penalties from talismanic strikers Kylian Mbappé and Robert Lewandowski. In Berlin, the Austrians dominated their match early after Donyell Malen deflected the ball into his own net to open the scoring; the Austrians launched five shots on target afterward, two of which were successful, as Romano Schmid and Marcel Sabitzer would both score in the second half to grab leads and ultimately the 3-2 victory. Austria finishes top of Group D with a 2-0-1 record, six points and a +2 goal differential; they will play the runner-up of Group F, currently Türkiye, next Tuesday in Leipzig. An eventful weekend is behind us. The first group matches of UEFA EURO 2024 have been played. What can we already summarise? Group A: Germany had a great start into the tournament. It is still difficult to say how the performance will be assessed. One of the reasons for this is that Scotland fell far short of their own potential. In the other group match, we saw a high-class and fast-paced game between Hungary and Switzerland. These opponents definitely have a different calibre to the Scots and from a German perspective, it's perhaps hard to imagine how an opening game against Swiss would have gone. We can definitely look forward to an interesting second game in this group. Group B: In this group, we have seen strong Spaniards. They are definitely a contender for the title at this stage. Croatia, however, have not managed to live up to their own expectations. The scene when Bruno Petkovic preferred to go for the penalty instead of pushing the ball into the empty goal was embarrassing. The result is well known. Italy had more trouble than expected against the surprising Albanians and will have to improve considerably in their next game against Spain. The match between Croatia and Albania should be interesting. Here, two teams meet at eye level for whom everything is at stake. Group C: Slovenia and Denmark gave us the first draw of the European Championship, including a football fairytale thanks to Christian Eriksen's goal three years after his cardiac arrest. This group will be very tight at the end. Both teams and Serbia are on the same level. England were surprisingly weak, as many experts feared, and were very lucky not to have equalised at the end. Harry Kane's statistics speak volumes. Southgate has to come up with something for the next game. With this defensive tactic, it will be difficult to progress in this group.
