🚀 Insights from the #GSER2024: A crucial trend in the global startup economy is the increasing commitment of entrepreneurs and ecosystems, with the support of governments, to address the climate crisis. This response to urgent environmental challenges underscores the potential of startups to develop solutions and drive substantial global change, not only in technology, but also in sustainability. Insights into the Cleantech sub-sector include: • Late-stage Cleantech startups raised 2.5x more funding in H2 2023 than in H1 2020. • The U.K., France, and Germany combined overtook the U.S. and China in early-stage Cleantech funding, increasing their Series A funding amount by nearly 50% in 2023 compared to 2021. • While funding has decreased overall, investors consolidated around critical sectors such as Cleantech in 2023. Innovation isn’t about ideas. It’s about solving real problems. Yesterday, I attended the presentation of the Open Innovation Challenge at ISE 2025, hosted by ACCIÓ in Catalunya. This global platform connects technology providers with corporations that are actively seeking solutions to their challenges. Here’s the key takeaway: ↳ Startups win when they understand big corporations’ problems and address them head-on. Too often, we focus on pitching what we can do. But the real question is: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺? When startups approach innovation like this, amazing things happen: • Corporations see immediate value. • Conversations shift from “interesting idea” to “how soon can we start?” • Partnerships form faster and with more impact. 😊 Yesterday marked the conclusion of Smau (Milano), an event that always provides a lively look into innovation, startups, and open innovation! The event brought together a host of industry experts who shared valuable insights into trends that will shape our future. As expected, artificial intelligence took center stage, sparking lively discussions about how it’s transforming industries across the board. 🚀 Another very interesting key theme was the focus on Venture Clienting and Corporate Venture, two essential strategies for closing the gap between the problem-solving power of startups and the innovation needs of large companies. These approaches are critical for aligning market expansion and product innovation with the agility and fresh solutions that startups bring. 📉 In Italy, however, this gap is still quite noticeable. Many corporations aren’t fully utilizing these strategies, often due to unfamiliarity or a lack of alignment at the management level. It comes back to a familiar issue already discussed here: innovation starts with leadership.
