To make a stockpile is not just about accumulating material...
When starting the stockpile, you must take into account the smooth ramp to prevent the truck from exerting too much effort when climbing the unloading ramp, this prevents wear and tear on equipment parts; The width of the ramp must be 3 to 4 times the width of the largest transport equipment;
You have to make safety barriers on the sides.
These are basic procedures when starting a Stockpile.

During my Graduate Training as a Mining Engineer in a surface gold mine(Edikan-Perseus), I encountered several challenging moments that tested both my technical knowledge and perseverance.
One of the most daunting experiences was during a heavy rainfall season. The pit walls became unstable, leading to increased risks of slope failure. As a Graduate Mining engineer, I was tasked with assisting in monitoring pit stability and ensuring employee safety within the active mining area. This required constant vigilance, conducting inspections under difficult conditions, and supporting the Mining Operations team in designing mitigation measures like drainage channels and slope reinforcements. The pressure to act quickly while ensuring accuracy was intense, as any oversight could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Another challenge came when I was assigned to supervise a drilling and blasting operation with the usage of Gasbags. Being relatively new, I had to coordinate with experienced operators, contractors, and blasting experts. Communicating effectively and gaining their trust was tough, especially when things didn’t go as planned. During one operation, a delay in explosives delivery disrupted the blasting schedule, putting production targets at risk. I had to think on my feet, working with the team to reschedule and minimize downtime, while also addressing concerns from impatient supervisors.
The scorching heat and long working hours also pushed my physical and mental limits. Adapting to the demanding schedule and ensuring compliance with strict safety protocols in such a high-stakes environment was a continuous learning curve.
These moments, though challenging, shaped my problem-solving skills, resilience, and ability to work under pressure. They gave me invaluable insight into the realities of surface mining operations and the critical importance of teamwork and safety.

SPONSORED POST: Are your pumps putting your production and on-site safety at risk?
Mines are challenging environments to operate in, often located in remote regions that are difficult to service. Equipment is subject to a lot of stress, which can lead to failures and, ultimately, lost production.
This is true of all equipment, but particularly pumps, which move the slurry through the various process stages. Put simply, if a pump stops working, production on that line halts.
At a Peruvian copper mine, two replicated feed cyclone pumps were installed in an attempt to reduce costs. Weir engineers had previously advised operators that replicated pumps and spare parts would increase their maintenance burden and expose them to a greater risk of unplanned shutdowns, with the accompanying production loss. Responding to these concerns, the operators agreed to compare the performance of the Warman pumps with genuine parts versus the replicated pumps to understand the Total Operating Cost of each option.
Find out how the two stacked up in this online profile below...
