Getting publicly reprimanded by my team was one of the best things that ever happened to me. There we stood in a conference room in New York, getting ready for our next meeting. I had just bragged about having never taken sick or vacation days, expecting a new level of respect from my team. (I know, terrible) "That's not the brag you think it is," she said just as the door had closed for our all hands meeting. Shocked at first, I just shut my mouth. Then people laughed, and the moment blew by. A bit of digging and ego checking made me realize how toxic that mentality actually was. I still think about that moment when I map out every vacation I can during the last week of the year. Only 48% of US workers say they use all their vacation days, according to a new survey from Pew Research Center. Maybe we forget, or don't want to use them, or believe we can't because there's too much going on. None of these reasons are good enough. Now every time I meet with new folks or new friends my message is this: Have you intentionally taken the time to look at when you need to rest and unplug from your routine? There is no formula here, no simple advice everyone can practice other than intention. Studies also show this dramatic fact: 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆. Take the time, be intentional, and separate yourself from work when it makes sense. Don't let the details cause stress, just break out the planning and do so far in advance. You just might come back to your challenges with even more energy and ideas than you thought possible. How do you make sure your time away is beneficial?

54% of people are faking their vacations. Americans are in a work environment where they feel like they just cannot unplug. They are stealing time away from themselves and their family to get work done. 34% of people work on vacation because they love their job, but there are still negative implications of not taking time away to rest. While some people work on vacation because they love their job, 26% of people do it because their boss demands it. A study by Harvard Business revealed that taking a vacation can actually reduce stress hormones, increase positive emotions and improve sleep. Taking a vacation is more crucial to our physical, mental, relational and professional health than we may think. So, it’s time to ask yourself, “What’s at the source of me being afraid to just turn work off while I’m on vacation?” Statistics pulled from Forbes article on “54% Of Individuals Continue To Work On Vacation: What Is The Cost?”

There was a period in my life where I felt like I couldn’t take a real break. I’m sure many doctors and healthcare providers can relate 👇 During weekends On vacations with your family It’s hard to enjoy the moment when you’re expected to always be “on”. It can take a toll not only on yourself, but also on your relationships… HERE’S AN IMPORTANT TRUTH: ✅ Being mentally and emotionally present for your loved ones is just as important as your physical presence So in the past 3 years when my family and I traveled a lot… I made sure to: ✅ Spend meaningful time with my family. ✅ Be fully present to make beautiful memories with them. You can manage this too by planning your time off like this: 📌 Schedule it like a major meeting → Just like work meetings, vacations need to be scheduled and prioritized. If it’s on the calendar, it happens! 📌 Communicate early → Before your vacation, inform everyone—from colleagues to clients—about your plans (Don’t get too specific, however!) This sets expectations and reduces last-minute rushes and requests. 📌 Set boundaries and stick to them → Set up proper away messages and talk to your trusted colleagues to handle emergencies. 📌 Plan for re-entry → Schedule a ‘buffer day’ to catch up on important matters and get back into work mode without the immediate stress of meetings and deadlines. 📌 Focus on what recharges you → Everyone recharges differently. Plan activities that refresh your spirit and energy. Remember, taking time off is essential for mental wellness and maintaining good relationships with your loved ones. You can’t perform your best if you never step back to recharge. How do you plan your vacations?

With burnout being incredibly prevalent, this is a friendly reminder to take 👏 your 👏 vacation. 👏 The benefits are clear - 1️⃣ Positive impact on your mind! An Ernst & Young study showed that for every additional 10 hours of vacation time that employees took, their year-end performance improved 8%, and another study showed that using all of your vacation time increases your chances of getting a promotion or a raise. Further, according to the EY study, those who took vacations more frequently were less likely to leave the firm. 2️⃣ Reducing stress that impacts your body. In a study of 749 women, researchers found that those who took vacation less than once every six years were eight times more likely to develop heart problems compared to those who went on vacation twice a year. Going on vacation can also lower your chances of dying from coronary heart disease, including lower blood sugar levels and improved HDL or “good” cholesterol levels. 3️⃣ Connection with what matters (friends, family, passions, nature, etc.). Time away from work allows you an opportunity to be your authentic self - let go of your ego and reconnect with who you are at your core. I can confirm that after a week of enjoying my family, friends, and nature in Gatlinburg - I'm reaping the benefits! Cheers to more adventures friends!! 🐻 #rest #vacation #culturefirst
