👀 Winding up your "terrible" side hustle I am the Founder of Rude Fox Games, an educational #games company I refer to as the world’s worst #sidehustle. That being said, it is post-revenue (I made $24 in 5 years, a mere $76 below the minimum Steam payout limit). I’ve had zero time for it, meaning it has become less of a hustle and more of an opportunity to pretend to be an entrepreneur. Unfortunately, it isn’t a viable business so I’m winding it up. While it is sad for me, I’d like to talk about something more important: fear of failure. We whisper about our setbacks, hide our unsuccessful ventures, and sometimes never start at all. The reality? Most ventures don't become unicorns and most side hustles don't replace your day job. When I launched Rude Fox, I had an objective to make £10,000... But that wasn't my only target: - Create my own personal MBA - Fulfil the urge to launch a company - Learn to code and make games - … Justify buying that fancy new laptop It was never going to work: - I didn't know how to make a game... - My artistic talent is only in my head - Turns out games are really hard to make. Respect to developers! - The games market... But I did buy the laptop, I learnt to code, I built and launched some games – one of which was a venture capital game… In a roundabout way, this journey changed my career. So… what dictates success? For me it is: - Getting started - Gaining a new set of skills and insights - Building new networks - Finding new opportunities - Trying to do something useful, and if you realise you’re not, adapting. And yes, profitability / growth is nice too ;-) If you’re nursing a side hustle idea – give it a go. Your "terrible" idea might lead you somewhere you'd never expect. As for Rude Fox Games, it was the best $24 I never made. A big thanks to Chris Phoenix and Lynsey E. for helping me for longer than they should have, and Nav Dean and Charles King for all your time and advice. Thanks also to Rob and the team at djca Chartered Certified Accountants for sorting out my accounts and preventing me from getting fined! Great team, highly recommend. Finally, thanks to everyone else who helped me waste my time better. For your entertainment, I’ve made a small showreel from 2020 to today. Enjoy! https://lnkd.in/eg6RzU_7 https://lnkd.in/ebhf_fZA

One of the strongest piece of advice you can get for 4 years of your college and it’s coming from Sam Altman Trying my level best to incorporate this advice in my life For example: 1) When joining a company, choose one on a breakout trajectory. That’s what I have done by joining RiskLayer, we are surely on a breakout trajectory and the learning curve by being a part of such a company is going to truly be immense. 2) Start a Company only if you have an idea you’re in love with I am truly in love with the gaming industry, if that wasn’t the case then I would not be stuck with Zenet for more than a year. And Gaming is something that I have been in touch with since childhood (atleast till the point I remember stuff), the first ever thing I did when I learnt to code was to learn how to make a game; ended up making snake and ping pong in Java in class 7th or 8th (don’t remember exactly when), also made a multiplayer battle royale game with my friend in class 12th as my computer science project. So yeah Games are surely something that I am in love with. #CollegeAdvice #Entrepreneurship #SamAltman #BreakoutTrajectory #RiskLayer #StartupLife #LoveWhatYouDo #Zenet #LearningCurve #CareerGrowth #Innovation #TechJourney #StartupCulture

"We need $400k, but we can bring it down!" indie developer pitching me their game at gamescom. "Why would you tell me you can bring down the price?", I ask. "A publisher told me it was too expensive." Please, NEVER do this. A publisher/investor will have their own opinion and feedback on your game, it doesn't mean they are right. You will talk to dozens, pitch to more, note down their pain points, but don't change your pitch just because of one feedback. At best, you look like a young company that just doesn't know what they are doing/asking for, or why they are asking for it. At worst you open up the publishers/investors to constantly drive down your ask. This isn't how negotiations work. And believe! game pitching IS negotiation. Publishers may benefit from driving down the price, they are haggling. If you don't know how to haggle, either avoid it during pitching, or let someone else from your team handle this part. Pro tip: go to flea markets and train that haggling skill! Also, watch Life of Brian. #publisher #investor #videogames #indierevolution #indiegames #bizdev #negotiations #haggling

Margarete Schneider outlines the distinction between incubators and accelerators in the video games industry. Incubators aim to support indie teams in developing early ideas or concepts, while accelerators focus on aiding existing projects or companies in their growth. These programs are designed to assist developers in building and expanding their projects, companies, and businesses. To delve deeper into the topic of Incubation Programs as Success Boosters for Game Developers, be sure to watch the full video on our YouTube channel. "We need to talk, I have news," are words I've come to dread as a pre-seed startup game studio founder. When times were hard in the industry, ICs dreaded their manager coming to them with those words. As a founder, I dread hearing it from my foxes helping with the studio. Times are hard, and people need money. I won't deny them that. I congratulate them on finding a paying job and help them any way I can. Does it sting and interrupt my roadmap, it can, but health and family ALWAYS come first. What I've heard time and time again, though, is, "I believe in this studio, what it stands for, and you and Terry as founders." That's amazing. We're building something amazing at WFG. I'm staking everything on this studio and the amazing games we have planned for y'all. Our announced first to market is a PvP Match 3 mashup with deep lore and a massive IP waiting to be tapped in future projects. But we're not a "match 3" studio. Close on its heels is something COMPLETELY different. All we need, is a little support to light this rocket. Please follow our upcoming Kickstarter project. The metrics really do help us line up advertising deals for the campaign. Help me make great games for you. Trust. Horns up foxes. https://lnkd.in/g_hZAXJg
